Thanks man! That's an interesting idea. I suppose we could do technically do that but with only one of the top bolts BC there's room underneath it, but for the back screw there's not much room to insert anything but the threaded insert.

The 3D print will include a thread to screw into so there will be a mechanical lock and not just a hole with epoxy.

Can you use threaded inserts, and bolt in from the bottom?

Also, with your rapid prototype system, can you grow the inserts into the part?

Re: Threads: That would certainly be a possible if this bond isn't strong enough.

I believe there are 3D printers that can print multiple materials, but we wanted to make sure we could use bolts/nuts/washers that are easily sourced that are produced with a certain quality of metal that has a measured performance.

I think the overarching theme of these questions might be it's strength. The 3D part is going to be printed with a high quality machine using the SLS process. (More common 3D printing is like a hot glue gun building layers - we're only going to use that for the prototype for test fitting)

The material we're going to use is Glass Reinforced Nylon, which is commonly used in Automotive Applications. The epoxy strength is going to be extremely strong. Some say that the epoxy we're planning on using is so strong, the entire part would fail before the epoxy does.

So we'll prototype with the cheap 3D printing process everyone is familiar with, then for production part we'll use Glass Nylon.

The shape of the part, plus the 2 mil thickness for the walls, plus an inner structure, plus the material is going to make an extremely strong shape. Probably overkill if you ask me, but I'd rather overkill than it flying off and actually killing

There are, but I know our Fortus FDM machine can be paused during the build cycle, to have inserts installed, and then continue on. We have not done it yet, but have discussed parts that we may try this.

That would be insanely cool. You could try it with a simple bolt inside of a ball.

Looks like we're almost at the finish line! Wanted to add a little flair to the bottom before sending it to the 3D printer - Nice and polished.

I'm sending it to the 3D printer today, and may be able to get the parts back tomorrow for test fitting!

And some cool X-ray photos!

Thanks so much man! OEM look is what I was going for! This 3D print was done using the FDM process which is great for prototyping but not so great for final product. Below is an example of FDM vs SLS. We'll use SLS for the final product and used FDM just to test fit the part.

This is awesome! I'm Beyond impressed. I love people who have an idea, go out and execute it. I can't wait to see the finished product.
