Guys, relax. OP is in SoCal, which means 91 octaine fuel. We simply don't get higher 93 octain in Cali.
The fact that engine shook and RPM dropped prior to the light appeared, lead me to believe that its a detonation. Why? DI + port injection switching. Give both companies some time to gather more cases and stats. Demo cars had 10K + miles on them during some reviews we read back April. I'm sure it would come up if it was THAT big of a deal. Take notes and bring those to your dealers. Meanwhile get gas only from reputable gas stations.

While that may be a contributing factor, it shouldn't start throwing CELs from 91 vs 93. Even the lowest grade fuel should 'work' but just not optimally. This is a 2013 car, I doubt it's that sensitive to fuel grade to the point it starts having idling issues and throwing codes.
Also, to Toyota's credit, they've beat Subaru in reliability for the last decade on both year-old and 10-year old cars.

We don't know anything about OP fuel. Numbers written on the wall are nothing. Deponation could trigger CEL and its a nasty one to figure out via codes - they are all over the board.

Cam sensors/alignment/engine internals (sans DI) are from Subaru, not Toyota. Don't try to be a fanboi and pin things on the other "parent". The twins belong to both companies and the most important thing is they work together to settle the issues quickly and efficiently.

When you mention a Chrysler from that era, it says it all to me. My dad had one of those Chrysler vans from that same time period, eugh..

I wonder if there is a difference between quality of US vs AUS/JPN fuels or if the US market cars have been de-tuned to suit etc.. |

I believe the fuel trims (ECU maps) are different for each region.
I remember when I would reflash the ECU on my Si, the Hondata stock maps for various regions were different and even some of the ECUs themselves were different.

The octane discussion is entertaining but it doesn't address the problem.
It says in the manual that 91 will do the job fine - most likely the ECU has been tuned to it then. |

I never had this problem when I lived in MI, but out here in CA I find if I stray from Shell or Chevron you can get bad fuel. Stations like Rotten Robbie and other cheaper stations would throw CEL in my GTI, which is a DI motor.
