It may depend on where you live as Esso was more of a East of the Mississippi thing at one point. Per the company's official history the name was changed in 1972 in the US due to some kind of muckety muck between different companies formed from the breakup of Standard Oil.

I specifically remember it at the time, including the advertisements around it. Could just be the difference in our ages as well since I would have been in my early teens and you would have been several years younger.

We had ESSO stations in PR until a while ago, which is weird since I was born a tad before 1980. My grandfather used to work in one before finally yielding to cancer. Thought they were related to ExxonMobil.

Always cracks me up when people eat shit at Goodwood Festival of Speed.

But in this case wow, what a shame.. poor car.

They are, same company different branding. it depends on what part of the world you are in, who owns local trademarks, and such. Some places it's also still known as Mobil.
