This isn't even beating a dead horse anymore. It's beating the skeletal remains of a dead horse that was beaten before it decayed(is it a sports car?!?!?!)....and then beating it yet again (s2000 comparison) because why not.

Sports car is a wide term with several variations. A smaller, responsive car designed for a higher level of manouverability/agility. Also higher speed performance and capable of quick acceleration. I would say that out of the box the twins are sporty, but with some modification it is a sports car. A Lotus Elise or Exige are probably what I'd consider sports cars out of the box.
My car, with upgraded tires, braking and power fits the definition of sports car to me. Whether the stock suspension fits the bill is somewhat subjective and possibly is a matter of opinion. Perhaps to fully fit the definition the car would also include performance enhanced suspension.
The twins are sporty with sports car potential, exactly their designer's intention. Had they been complete sports cars they would have been $15K or more at the dealership and probably not reached an economy of scale for the manufacturer.
I'd like to see a true club Sport model available in the future for the small percentage of consumers willing to pay for it. I still doubt they'd give it much more power though. I don't consider the Release Series a Club Sport with TRD springs being the only real performance enhancing feature.

Damnit why do I get to every good thread late?

And it wasn't good because of the original question.

On topic though... who gives a shit? Do you enjoy driving it?

FRS feels like a boat? Oh I know you must be trolling hard..lmao. Funny thing is I drove a NC and the suspension is so plush in comparison to the twins stock setup. The NC also needs suspension mods asap and the 86 didn't feel heavier in my feeling through the seat.

Honestly, when I think "sports car", I think 2 seater coupe.

So, a 350Z would be considered a "sports car" under that logic. However, I think the FRS/BRZ has more of a "sports car" build compared to the 350Z.

It's all splitting hairs honestly. It all comes down to how you individually interpret the term. In regards to the FRS/BRZ handling feeling like a boat compared to the MX5, I can see it; though maybe a bit of a stretch. The MX5 is much smaller and weighs a few hundred pounds less, so it isn't really that far-fetched that the BRZ feels big and bulky compared to the MX5. I have very little time in the seat of one so I can't comment on that.

I say let people call it whatever they want. That way, when you lap them on a track while they're driving a "real sports car" they can feel that much more ashamed when you pass them in your...... sport"Y" car lol.

I agree with DAEMANO.
The point of a "sports car" is to make it capable of participating in sporting events with minimal modification.

One of the things that made the Porsche 550 Spyder so popular was that: "The beauty of the 550 was that it could be driven to the track, raced and then driven home, which showed the flexibility of being both a road and track car"

THAT is what makes a "street car" a "sports car".
It needs to have been designed from it's inception as a performance racing machine.

Now everyone is going to argue various points about why this car is NOT THAT.
But in the end it comes down to "what will sell to the public" and that meant making the car CHEAP as well as perform.
That is where the rubber meets the road AND where the marketing/finance guys need to have the celebrity death-match with the engineers.

In the other thread I argued that a Front wheel drive car is NOT a "sports car" because not one single automotive engineer would EVER say " Hey I want to build a performance car so lets start with FRONT wheel drive" That just does not happen.
Are there FAST FWD cars? - SURE but they did not start out from their inception as a "sports car".

Is the 86 a "sports car"? - Definitely.

Maybe it's a dwarf sports car like Pluto is a dwarf planet. We can go with that until there is a definitive definition to go buy.

Sports cars are very slow(straightline-wise). It's the high performance versions like Ferrari, Corvette and Porsche that makes people think they only suppose to come fast. The history of sports cars is an eye opener. Plenty of 45-80hp coupes that weighed 1500-2100 lbs mainly from Europe. If you modernized that then a 200hp coupe that weighs 2750 lbs seems about right.
