Haha, that made me actually laugh . No, I am developing new driving habits. I had a very heavy foot on the gas pedal.

Danger stupid = better mileage. Or so it seems.

We have a gauge that gives average and instantaneous fuel economy in l/100 km. It is reasonable to say that for the sake of comparison to others with Canadian spec cars this is a reasonable measurement on an internet forum.

Dude decides to post an inquiry on comparing his fuel economy with others using a totally different measurement standard which requires everyone to pull out a calculator and figure it out. Wonders why the numbers don't align. Announces he is an engineering student.

Suggestion: Try using a more convoluted measurement, start a forum thread asking others to compare, listen to crickets.

For everyone else, lets keep things simple and understandable, leave mental challenges for the mentally challenged.

I should say that I do no care about my fuel consumption, I have only driven ~7000km in 9 months since buying my BRZ so I do not see the need to try to get better results.

Seems like I'm getting slightly better result than you are. I'm using 91 without ethanol. In my experience the 10% ethanol gas that I can buy in my area will translate to ~10% less millage.

6. Consolidate trips -depends if the road has a lot of curves
7. Yield the right of way to aggressive drivers -sometimes
8. Coast down hills and slight grades -yes
9. Time merging into traffic when entering a highway -yes but thats easy when you can gain lots of speed on the ramp !!

I wish the U.S. would adopt the volume/distance standard. There is a nice linear relationship with efficiency and fuel expenses -- improving by one unit saves the same amount of money no matter where you start rather than a decaying savings as you improve your fuel efficiency by one unit in mpg. I have coworkers that freak out when their Prius goes from 50mpg in the summer to 45mpg in the winter. The cost is completely negligible. Someone that goes from 15mpg to 14mpg is spending a lot more money with that seemingly small 1mpg change.

Amerika still refuses to join the rest of the world and go metric, you would think that profit motive (corporate greed) would put the yanks in sync with the rest of the world.
I grew up with miles lb.s and ounces, and cannot visualize distance as well in metric and HATE metric !

BRING BACK OUTDATED MEASUREMENT !

You can do what I'm saying in English or metric units. L/100km or gal/100mi. Volume/distance is the key point. I can't tell you how many people say they went with x car over y car because it got 39mpg versus 37mpg. The fuel cost difference at that point is negligible. 14 versus 16 is sizable.

I don't know if this is true for all, but the shift points are preposterous. They usually tell me to shift at 1,400 rpm. I can't believe that lugging the engine would save gas.

I'm surprised nobody has asked this yet.

Do you live in a high altitude region? Like in the mountains? Above 5000, 8000, or 10000 ft?

Your engine gets much less efficient as air gets thinner. As an aerospace engineer I have some formula somewhere that is a good estimate of your engine power with respect to altitude. When a plane flies above 3000 ft I have to start accounting for the ambient atmosphere doing power calculations. (this is only for internal combustion motors not jet turbines)

Anyways if you are high up, even on land, you can experience a significant loss in fuel economy. I figured ppl in the mountains would have chimed in.

Me too!
It is funny though as I work in a plant in Windsor (right across from Detroit) and all the locals only know temperatures in Fahrenheit but say something is x feet long and they look at you like you have two heads (except the engineers who always look at you that way)
