That's true, but unfortunately nothing else made by anyone compares to that car. Name another 3000lb RWD 300 hp car. You can't, doesn't exist.

Lotus Exige... but I get what you're saying. To be honest, that was the final reason why I bought the FR-S. I've bitched about a car like this not being available for years. I figured I could not buy the FR-S because it's not turbo or because it has a boxer or any other reason... but in the end I want automakers to produce more cars like this so I had to buy.

While I didn't list it as a requirement, you can't DD an Exige. It's really just a toy. Next to zero cargo carrying capacity and no rear window. But I suppose it does exist. You can DD a Cayman easily and it has a surprisingly large amount of cargo room.

My reason for buying is similar to your's. Though I'm kicking myself in the ass mentally on a daily basis from the lack of power.

A friend of mine DD'd an exige year-round up here in Boston. Threw some snow tires on it for the winter and even drove it in the snow. I think he may be nuts, though.

I agree the Cayman's the better choice. Exige is the only other car I could come up with that met the weight/power levels.

I dont foresee much until there is a direct competitor to the FR-S from a rival Japanese/Korean car maker.

Once there is a competitor Toyobaru will be quick to update the twins.

This is kind of why I'd like to see a competitor to the Twins. Over time though, they'll continue to one-up each other on power and price (and weight) until they've completely priced themselves out of the market and neither car will be profitable. Both cars will exit the market as 300 hp / 3300 lb pigs, and consumers will be left waiting for the next FR-S to come along.

The thing is though, just about EVERYTHING is more expensive there, higher taxes, higher minimum wage, higher standard of living, it isn't really comparable. There are definitely communities in America where this car at the low low price of $25k is absolutely un-affordable for the vast majority. The question isn't the cost of the car, it's the competition. For that money you can get a well kitted Mustang, 370Z or a used Cayman S with a dealer warranty/service package that would eat it alive in most comparisons.

As for competition in the current pricing, the next Miata should be quicker than what we've got and there's hope that GM executes the 130R well, and rumors are that the Mustang will be shedding weight in the next iteration, with an ecoboost and proper tuning that will really be an interesting matchup.

That's quite the jaded view to have. There's no "law" that says the Twins will gain much weight just because power levels could increase.

A few years ago I ran to Best Buy while it was snowing and there was a road salt crusted Ferrari 360 in the parking lot. Actually, it must have been more than a few years ago because the 360 was still a current model at the time.

Haha I was having fun with that comment and using a bit of hyperbole, but if you look at past trends, this is pretty much how cars always evolve. The Miata is a great example. It's a car that started out with a similar philosophy to the twins (light weight, low power, fun concept).

1991 Miata NA: 2100 lbs / 116 hp
1998 Miata NB: 2350 lbs / 140 hp
2006 Miata NC: 2447 lbs / 167 hp

Only now is Mazda bucking the trend with the ND, fighting the trend of heavier cars and more hp.

Pretty much every car follows this trend, from Accords and Mazda 6's to BMW 3 series, etc.

I heard that there was a dealership in Richmond, Indiana that installs turbo kits and other modifications and it won't void our warranty! That's hear say from my friend who has a 12 tc going to turbo his soon and says he spoke to them about it. If so I want to turbo mine really soon and maybe some coilovers and wheels call it a day
