Mine wasn't.

1974 Chevy Nova with 350 and a special order gearing option that made it loaf along at 60 mph and didn't feel fun until 75 or so. This was the time of the federally mandated 55 mph speed limit no matter if two lane or rural interstate. It was very easy to look down and find myself going way over the limit. And the State Patrol found me doing this several times culminating in a tasteless letter from the state that I was in danger of losing my driving privileges.

That was the good part.

The throttle on this car would get stuck once in a while. It ate transmissions and developed a weird pac man-like "Wuccha-wuccha-Wuccha" noise from somewhere in the back end. The vinyl roof developed a little tear above the windshield and finally tore off on an ill-fated road trip. The exhaust was rusted and if I opened a window to cool off, exhaust fumes were pulled into the car. Some previous owner had defeated the seatbelt system by tying knots in the belts and stuffing them into the covers at the anchor point. And the rust that eventually revealed itself....

I still can't stand the sight of GM metallic burgundy. I never again bought a used car and it is the last American built car I owned.

Eventually I traded it in on a new 1985 VW Golf. It was a major leap forward in driving pleasure. Shortly afterwards I spotted my Chevy dead on the side of a local freeway. No mistaking that car's identity.

My first was a hand me down silver 1976 Mercury Capri II 4 cyl my Mom owned when new and I shared with 2 siblings. It was our family's first imported car (from Germany). The 2.3 L engine/auto trans had no guts and I got in trouble when my brother's friend reported to my family he had seen me flying around a corner almost taking the tires off the rim. I was just practicing what I had seen rally drivers do on TV.

Notable feature: a "rolling" light, basically a goose neck map light on the passenger side A pillar that was handy when the passenger was rolling a joint.

Identical to the silver on shown 1/2 way down this page:

Ahhh but see, yet again you remember it and have loads of stories. That is what I meant by the first car was "great". It may have been the biggest crap heap on the road but you remember everything about it and can still tell the stories all these years later as if they were yesterday.

I think I qualify for antique.
Turning 70 in a couple of months. I still have the first new car I bought. A 1968 MGB/GT. Got it while in collage, got my license at Watkins Glen.
Raced until married, had to take time off for children.
Finally in 1999 got a new AC and put a LS1 in it and went back to the track. Three new engines later (dry sump LS7 now). I did get tired pulling it all over the south.
Got a Mini S in 03 as a DD but it was on the track at Black Hawk several times. Can not leave anything alone, so engine work, exhaust, brakes.
Somehow during this time MGB's started to multiply in the shop.
I remembered how much fun the track was so I got a Noble M400, damn that car is fast!
Parents died and I inherited a small house in Fl. So I "needed" a small rag top to drive. Got an older Porsche Boxster S. No track time yet.
Took my Mini to my son near PIR for him to drive and play with and got the BRZ, Ok, couldn't leave it alone, wheels, tires, brakes, exhaust, and of course a supercharger.
Some where in between a 1933 MG/J2, a 1956 AC/Ace (reproduction), and several MGB restorations.
I get up every morning and say to myself how lucky can one guy get, and I smile.

Yes there are some good stories - the vinyl roof tore off the car just before we got to Panama City beach. My sister and her cute girlfriend slunk down in the seats so no one would see their grand entrance. And of course if we rolled down the windows we'd asphyxiate from exhaust. Florida in the summer with the windows up.... That story still comes up at family gatherings. But that car never left me stranded

My new Golf was supposed to be our ride but delivery was delayed.

I am beginning to wonder if this thread was not some evil plot to identify and weed out the old guys!

Sixty-seven here, and this is my most recent "sports" car. Previously owned several older Porsches, several older Alfas, an Austin Mini (not the current bastardization), and too many motorcycles to count. Currently thinking of the the new Alfa Guilia, but would require selling the FR-S, and I love this car, so can't say. Age is a state of mind.

Well so far in this thread you hold a commanding lead. We know there are (were?) two older ones here but have not seen them in a while.

Nah they need the calming rationality of (some of you other) old guys.

Old bull and Young bull standing on a hill looking down at all the cows:
Young bull looks at the old bull and says "Hey, let's run down there and do one of those cows"
Old bull replies 'No, let's walk down there and do them all"
