Yeah I still don't get it... your friend traded in his g37s and paid $7000 for the FRS, so he's out the full MSRP of the car. Now he's going to sell it to you for $15k and lose $10k on the deal. So basically he's just giving you $10k... right. And if it's a car that his insurance is replacing why can't they just change the order to manual? That would save the insurance company $1000. It doesn't add up.

Anyways... if you do get the auto you should be able to sell for mid 20's easily. Then you can buy a manual for MSRP and you're only out a few grand in addition to the $15k you spent on the auto, so you're still getting a really cheap FR-S thanks to your generous friend.

This idea is just ridiculous/nonsense/fucking blasphemy for a new car. When the FRS is 25-30 yrs old, then we'll start hearing about this kind of craziness; auto to manual swaps.

Despite this whole deal sounding really strange, when money changes hands between friends it can quickly turn into an abrupt loss of friendship. Considering this is over a wrecked car, it could get ugly if there's a disagreement or whatever, especially after money has changed hands.

The safest bet would be the consensus of the thread, don't bother, the auto swap is WAY more complicated. Not having a drivetrain warranty on a brand new 1st gen model like this is kind of silly, unless you're loaded.

Just buy a new FRS with the MT, there's FAR more pros than cons to do it this way.

In regards to the original question, as many have stated, an AT to MT swap would be ill advised.

The parts would probably end up running you somewhere close to 8-10k to get them to you and god knows how long the wait will be. Labor will be more on top of that and it would also be hugely expensive. In the end, let's say you will pay near 11k for this swap.

If you actually do have this odd friend of yours, then it would be best for you to buy his car, enjoy it for perhaps a month or so, and then sell it on for fairly near MSRP. Then, with that money, you could buy a MT FRS brand new and enjoy it for the rest of your life.

But, hypothetically, if you perhaps bought an AT FRS impulsively and now actually want an MT FRS, then you're only option would be to sell the AT and buy an MT, and eat the lost value.

I'll end up selling the AT and getting a MT. thanks guys for your opinions. and yes i know how crazy it sounds to change transmissions on a brand new car, but I was just wondering. because this deal is real, and I wanted to know what my best options were. anywho, I'll be getting that fr-s hopefully .

I think the real question here is how are you gonna eat the lost value if it is lost? That would mean that there is no value present to be consumed....

I kinda wish I got a MT now..... but I am also lazy and some days AT is all I can handle. Im still torn.

I had a e46 M3 and guys are already swapping transmissions on those and those are way more complex and expensive than these cars.

A simple IOU will suffice. Preferable one that is written on a tasty sandwich for easy and enjoyable consumption!

seriously??? i doubt you're friend will be willing to lose 10thousand dollars, if he is, get him to install a manual for you or better yet have him push the auto off of a cliff and buy you a new manual, lol!
