changing the transmission of an fr-s from automatic to manual.

I was solely bent on getting a manual transmission, mainly because I like to "feel" the car and so on. You shifters out there know what I mean;). But anyway, here's my dilema. My friend has a whiteout fr-s in automatic that he would sell me for about 15k. brand new,its going to be shipped to him in october. dont ask me how he is able to sell it for so cheap lol. I don't know myself. I just want to know how much it would cost and everything to change the transmission to manual.

Sell it, then buy a manual... duh

It depends on the cost of the parts, but it's going to be a bit expensive since you can't pick up a suitable transmission anywhere but a dealer. Same for the pedal parts. You may also need to change the ECU. Of course, the paddle shifters will become useless - maybe you could change them into radio controls.

In the end, it could cost enough to make this not such a great deal if you do the work yourself. If you have it done by someone else, you end up above the cost of a new car with a 6spd. You're also going to hurt the resale value and void your warranty.

My recommendation is to just buy the car and drive it as-is. Or if you're set entirely on a 6mt, then buy one instead of trying to make one from an auto. If you still want a manual, you can still sell this one for more than you paid for the next 2 years or so.

Sorry man, something doesn't add up. Anyone else find it fishy his friend is getting a brand new frs auto for ten 12k under msrp, and its being"shipped" to him? And then he is going to just sell it at that price?

Sportsguy83 08-15-2012 02:21 PM

I would buy it, sell it for 22K, and use that money to put into a 6MT BRZ Limited :D

Sell it at a profit, use profit as a large down payment on MT FR-S. Honestly though ... something isn't right with this picture.

Incredibly fishy. Not sure why he'd take a $10k loss on a car he hasn't taken delivery of.

He hasn't picked it up yet? Then why buy it at all if he doesn't want it? Sounds like BS but what do I know :)

Auto to manual swaps usually consist of:
Transmission (obviously)
Clutch disc/pressure plate/flywheel
Hydraulics (either OEM hardlines or SS braided lines)
Clutch master and slave cylinders
6MT brake pedal (may be combined with gas in a single pedal, or by itself or if everything else is the same and just the pedal arm/pad is sold may be able to just swap that one part)
Clutch pedal assembly

Specifics, I've never looked at a 6AT so I'm not sure if there's a hole/plate on the firewall where the CMC would go, or if you'd have to drill it.

Also it's likely (but not a 100% bet) that the driveshaft is different as well (length, or input shaft going into the trans).

Also, 6AT ECU may not operate without the 6AT's sensors working, or wiring work to bypass all that, so it may need a 6MT ECU.

Wiring for common sensors in the trans may also be different.

Trans mount may also be different.

Cliff notes: There is almost no reason to justify this swap on a car this new without a ready supply of pre-owned parts. Sell the 6AT if you get it for that crackrock price and buy a 6MT car.

FRS for half price...........BUY BUY BUY BUY WTF WTF WTF

sw20kosh 08-15-2012 02:48 PM

Sounds like someone jumped the gun and bought an auto but now wants a manual *wink*

Don't bother converting it. It is so much hassel you don't even want to imagine.
