I'm a huge trail braker and I have never had it cause understeer on the frs with race tires but it does cause the power steering to overheat and the pump reduces assist and I can barely turn the car. If you truly have understeer the steering goes light, you continue to turn the wheel but the car goes straight. I suspect you have increasing effort at the wheel like me?
In our case, the car just plows; steering effort doesn't increase. We're not using any crazy tires, although we do plan on eventually trying NT01s and possibly TDs. We're on puny little 215/45/17 star specs

Clint Boisdeau and 949 racing have also confirmed the issue with our specific car; we haven't yet tried changing rear compounds, but will do so before our next test day.

I'll keep everyone posted.

*edit* Just to clarify, everything is off; Traction is held for ~3 seconds until both yellow lights are on.

It makes snese to me that it's either:
A: Signalling EBD is actually active as it's sensing a difference in front/rear wheel speeds while brake is being applied. or
B: As Element Tuning stated, only signalling that current conditions would require stability control to be in effect if it were actually active.

I'd like to see some datalogging showing definitively what's happening and if it's actually affecting the car's behavior.

Ok if you are turning everything off properly you're just asking the car to do something it cannot. You also mentioned less friction rear pads which I'm sure is part of the problem. I've tested with abs off with equal friction pads and the fronts lockup first so equal friction at the very least should b run front to rear.

Try this:

I just tried the procedure. Seemed to turn everything off. Have yet to try it on a course, though. Worth a shot!

Somewhat unrelated, but in testing last weekend and this weekend, we were able achieve proper trail braking/rotation under braking with our current setup.

It's totally FUBAR, but it works for now.

225 RS3 front, 215 Star Sec rear
1/32" toe-out front, 0 toe rear
-1.35 camber front, -1.4 camber rear

This setup also worked (we went a bit extreme for testing purposes)

225 RS3 front, 215 Star Sec rear
3/16" toe-out front, 3/32" toe-out rear
-1.35 camber front, -1.4 camber rear

I was finding this same thing happening to me on some windy roads here. What we are seeing with VSC & TRAC off is yet another system activating, Auto LSD. If one wheel comes off the ground/looses traction it applies the brake to that wheel wheel to transfer the power to the one on the ground/more traction. Used in Toyota trucks and SUVs.

This is what I found after researching the repair manual to turn off VSC, TRAC, and Auto LSD.

What you need to do is put the vehicle in "inspection mode". This mode is recommended for diagnosing safely on a dyno. (Per the repair manual).

I later found out this was called the "pedal dance" by some fellow Lexus friends I have.

Now how to do the so called pedal dance,

First of all, "the disclaimer" Myself and the manufacture WILL NOT take any responsibility for STUPID things you do while in inspection mode. Plus, I am sure the EDR is watching....

These next steps need to be completed within 30sec. So it may take you a few times to get it right. It did for me, but I can't dance so go figure...... Hehe!

Step 1: eng. off in neutral on MT, park on AT, parking brake off on flat ground.

Step 2: start engine apply the parking brake (leave on)

Step 3: depress the brake pedal twice and hold down on the third.

Step 4: while still holding the brake pedal, release and apply the parking brake twice.

Step 5: with the parking brake still applied depress the brake pedal twice. The VSC and TRAC lights should illuminate. (BTW ABS is still active)

Shutting off the ignition and back on will reset it back to normal.

Have some SAFE fun without the auto LSD slowing your exit out of a turn!

I guess I'll need to try this. There is a Toyota engineer laughing maniacally somewhere.

I used to do this on the IS350...its a PITA and I hope that it's not necessary for every run. I barely can remember to hit one button to disable everything on the WRX...

I would need a cheat sheet to remember that.

I have not seen this behavior either in autocross or on the street myself. It is interesting there is no mention of this anywhere in the manuals.

I got it under full ABS braking in an autocross. Stock tires on a sandy course. It did not affect my driving. I'd be curious to see if this kicks in with stickier tires.

I wonder if I am having the same problem?

The last two times I raced at Meadowlands NJ I went hard on the brakes and the pedal was Very hard and the car wouldn't stop, it really made it hard to make that turn. I tried pulling the ABS fuse, I went into the same turn with the same speed and when I hit the brakes it just locked up both front tires Bad. So I put it back in and just dealt with it. The next day, I raced somewhere else with high speed braking and didn't have any problems.

That sounds a lot more like ice mode than stability control. MR2 and Z06 would do exactly that.
