Ditto.

OP, just go for it. Everything will have been contaminated so at a minimum, the heads will need cleaned/inspected. Thanks for keeping us posted.

So I'm at a decision point right now. Keep in mind I have 70k on the engine.
Options:
1) Tear down the engine and put a new short block on it, but during the tear down they may find more issues. Out the door cost may be $5k or more.
2) Swap the motor with a new long block and have them put the supercharger back on ( I probably should drop off the manual).
3) Swap the motor and have them put the oem intake back on. Keep the supercharger piping and hoses in place and then install the supercharger myself.
4) Trade it in as-is and get a new 2017 BRZ. But I'll lose my supercharger and aftermarket parts (upgraded rotors, exhaust, overpipe, master cylinder brace)

Options 2 and 3 would be the easiest financially.
#4, I'd have to save up for another supercharger and have a car payment.

What would you do?

A new long block is off the table unless I can source one myself. Sadly, I think I'll be trading it in for a WRX Sti. Even though it doesn't have the styling, it has the power and enough handling. I don't know if I can bear driving a stock BRZ around. I fell in love with the supercharged power.

I drove the WRX and wasn't in love with it so I ended up buy a new 2017 BRZ Limited WITHOUT the premium package so I can still use my 16 inch wheels with winter tires I bought a couple weeks ago. The dealer also agreed to let me swap the new car's wheels and tires with my old ones. Which is a win for me.. They are wrapped with Dunlop Direzza Star Spec II's from the summer time.

The BRZ was more than capable without the Brembo brakes, so I figured why bother.

I also ended up buying the 60 month / 60,000 mile extended coverage for my piece of mind. Spinning a bearing at 70,000 miles doesn't exactly install confidence in the long term reliability of the motor.

Update: I actually cancelled the extended coverage since it already had a 60mo/60k mile powertrain warranty. It was just extending my bumper to bumper 2 years. It didn't hold much value for me.

Well that is one way to fix rod knock. Hahaha. Congrats on the new car!

Not going to lie though I was looking forward to the results of a full teardown because to me it sounds to high pitch/light and high speed to be rod knock. At idle a single rod knocking wouldn’t turn over as fast as yours was. I guess you could have smashed multiple rod bearings but I sort of doubt they would all go together. Or maybe your videos were at a super high idle.

I would love to know more about this revised timing cover. Mine is leaking a little and it’s tempting to just swap to the newer cover while I am at it. Not sure if it’s dependent on other engine changes though. It would be cool to see the original side by side with a newer revision.

I think it's hard to decipher the sound. I think it actually sounds a little different when standing in front of the car vs listening to it from a video.
The idea was pretty high in a couple of the videos because it was at a cold start.

In all the years owning an Acura/Honda and Mazda I never have spun a bearing so I don't know exactly how it sounds like. I'll just have to trust the master mechanic's experience and knowledge

Spending $1875 for a teardown didn't make sense to me given the age of the engine and the possibility of other things going wrong.. Also, it was a 1st year production engine so I would never trust it again after it is fixed.

Otherwise, I would've liked to do the teardown.. If I had the engine, I'd tear it down myself right now.

If you don't mind, what did you get on trade in for your BRZ?

Only $5k. In June it was worth $15k KBB value.
