What is this? Knocking Popping Tapping noise from the engine bay no codes

I just started getting a loud tapping/popping noise in the engine bay. I have no ECU codes.
Could this be just the pulley gone bad? I know the pulley tensioner slaps around quite a bit.

I have a JRSC with stock internals/pulleys etc..

Spinning the idler pulley by hand. It seems to stop abruptly compared to the other pulleys I spin

Another video of the noise

Doesn't sound like a pulley to me. Listen with a rubber hose and isolate where the noise is coming from

Sounds like its in the vicinity of the passenger side around Cylinder #1 or #3, but sounds louder when I'm closer to #3.
Was listening to rod knock videos, and I think it sounds similar.

Oh, my, .......I'm not sure what is making that tapping/knocking sound ...... but, it can't be good .......:sigh:

Sounds like valve noise. Time to tear into it.

arren123 01-01-2018 07:13 PM

I'm going to bring it to the stealership for a diagnostic. Unfortunately I don't have the time to take it apart.

Hoping that it isn't rod knock and is easier/less expensive to fix. Bracing for the worst though.

I didn't want to be the first one to say this... not from a video on the internet. But his response to my post is not awesome. :(

Right? We've heard enough of them by now.

Sounds like valve or rocker arms.

Ya, it does sound a little light for a rod knocking.

Back in the day I would have called that sound a tappet out adjustment or a stuck hydraulic lifter …….. but, we aren’t back in the day ……:iono:

Humfrz,

Give a listen to this one and let me know what you think. It's from a cold start the next day. It is pretty loud when I move to the passenger side.

Manual Limited

Does not make a difference if I have the clutch pedal pressed down or up.

If it was an auto the answer would have been simple but it doesn't apply to the manual.

I am in the crowd that thinks it sound a little light for rod knock but unfortunately don't have any other answer.
