Tire pressure sensors? Cheap, known to break easily doing routine maintenance. It's really not even a necessary convenience.

The TREAD Act requires that all passenger vehicles sold in the United States after September 1, 2007 have a tire pressure monitoring system that alerts the driver to low pressure if the pressure in a tire drops below 75% of the pressure posted on the door placard. Some cars do have sensors that report the actual pressure for display on the dash. Our cars are not among them. Ours just tell the car when the tire drops below the statutory threshold.

Not necessary, but required by federal law.

Nope. The data isn't there. The TPMS units in our wheels are simple on/off pressure switches. They just tell the car to illuminate the idiot light when the pressure drops below the minimum pressure. They don't tell the car anything about the actual pressure until it drops to that level, and then it doesn't tell the car how low it actually is.

If the data were there, you could solve the problem by just reading it in Torque or DashCommand. I wish they could have just left that bullshit off there altogether, but the federal government says it has to be there. Thanks Obama.
So there must be a different kind of TPMS. Toyota Highlander has it, so it would be just another parts bin.

Are there different types of TPS? Is it possible that the sensor is designed to go off a X pressure and signal a warning, kind of like a value or something that closes when psi drops, but doesn't actually read anything? Thus making it cheaper.

What I will say about the Toyota - Subaru relationship in terms of the Twins is that Subaru got the short end of the stick. If I recall correctly, I could be wrong, Subaru was under the impression that they were going to get a AWD option but then Toyota put together a prototype and showed it off to journalists without any AWD capability in the design. At that point Toyota had a % ownership in Subaru and there really was no dropping out of the project.

When you think about marketing, the only thing Subaru about the BRZ is the engine. Everything else was basically dictated by Toyota as far as I can tell. If they could go back I guarantee they would have dropped out of the project.
It's good Subaru didn't drop out. They would have lived in stone age. They couldn't figure how to DI their boxer until Toyota slapped D4S in their FA. Subaru didn't have keyless entry either before 86, and KE they are using on everything in their lineup is Toyota's parts bin. They also change from window mounted side mirror to door mounted side mirror after collaboration. Subaru learned a lot of stuff from this project.

Not like they create a new feature like Eyesight that would eat up a huge chunk of the resource. Guess Subaru just like to go cheap on everything.

I don't mind them charging a 300-500% profit margin on convenience feature. Toyota and Subaru should ask themselves what they do wrong, why is the car not as successful as muscle cars? Is it the power? Can they make up power number with something else? Is it design? Can they do better with the same money? Is it the standard features and options? Fuji/Subaru and Toyota are not small companies and they obviously can't make their car better overall than competitors.

I'm a Subie owner, and I think Subaru have done a phenomenal job overall, but they can do better on their performance side.

Just my .02
You fixed on the TPMS and missed my point. No matter how cheap or easy it is to do they had to stop adding things at some point. They decided to cut it off at what they had. I have no idea why they picked that point but they did.
If they did everything that each individual would like them to have done it would easily be a $40K car. I was not for one second saying that the sensors alone would cause that price (thought that was clear) but simply that if they did every "it could have had this" it would soon be very expensive.
Besides they need to leave something for the next kick at it so maybe they figured that a pressure gauge would be something for then.

Too bad Toyota still couldn't fix Subaru's ugly styling trend since about 2006.

I totally get what you were saying. I was just having fun playing devil's advocate.

Tire pressure gauge is a nice to have, not a must have. They should fix the cheap interior on the next gen. before anything else because most 86 out there are daily drivers. You will be surprised how nice the new Corolla interior is compares to 86.

Oh god! BRZ is the only decent looking car in their lineup, and it's designed by Toyota.

Another decent looking car is Levorg, and it's not sold in the US because "performance cars are more defined in sedan segment."

Humm I fail to see how the Corolla interior is nicer, unless you mean all the faux stitching and chrome rings.

Our cars have a non-reflective soft touch upper dash and Alcantara seating, to me that's much more impressive.

Like I've said before soft touch trims are not hard wearing and it'll look like shit after a few years. For a very focused sports car I quite like the current interior. Okay I admit I can use a nicer glove box for sure.

For example, look at what happened when Toyota went from the first gen IS to the 2nd gen, they completely lost the plot in terms of driving dynamics but they surely *fixed* the interior.

LOL Looks can not be debated. The latest gen WRX and STIs are the ONLY Subarus I have liked the looks of and to me the further back you go the uglier they got.

I'm talking about dash soft touch material in Corolla. Subaru tends to be more rugged on the dash. Their Legacy is pretty nice, Hope next twins will get similar Legacy interior quality.

I wouldn't say 2IS bad. Everyone said it was bad, but when the 3IS came out, journalists admitted that 2IS chassis was really good but suspension was tuned for comfort.

Don't think they had the other one here.

Actually the SVX sounds like it was a decent car if you could get past that stupid glass set up. Never heard of it before.

I LOLed at this in the Wikipedia article though:

Actually there are still a few SVX in mint condition running around in Scarborough. I think they only came with an Automatic gearbox.

I thought Subaru kind of remade the Brat some time ago called the Baja? I've seen a yellow one around here too.

These days a nice interior seems to be just lots of padded leather and faux stitching, or rubber soft touch surfaces. I just can't get by the fact that they are trying to hide the use of really thin cheap plastics underneath.

I much prefer thick textured plastics that don't creak and rattle, and of course authentic leather and thick carpeting, to me that's real quality.

Dam this means I need an old air cooled Porsche 911 Turbo.

Never seen an SVX before in my life. I kind of like it except for the fish bowl glass and at 231HP stock in 1991 it was no slouch.
I loved this line though - "All early versions of the SVX sold were equipped with automatic transmissions, as a manual transmission capable of handling the horsepower and torque of the EG33 engine was not produced by Subaru at the time".

The Bajas incorporate every feature that I found ugly in Subaru. I know I will get hate mail but I can not stand those damned oversize fog lights they used for so long.
