It should work when you insert SD card while car is off. But disconnecting battery will reset all "memory" in car radio. Thus if there is some kind of firmware issue (bug), then disconnecting battery might help (as IT supports says "Have you tried to restart it?" )

Did you ever resolve this issue? I am in the same exact boat; bought a 2013 BRZ from a non Subaru dealer and had no clue about the SD card, everything worked but there was no card... Had to have my transmission replaced under warranty just 2 months later and when it was done they gave me the bad news about the missing card and the 500 dollar price tag...

I'm hoping to buy an original 2013 SD card used, but before I spend the money on it I want to make sure buying a used card from an identical model year car will actually work.

No, I didn't pursue it further. Would take me too much time and energy to argue about the crappy radio.

I got a better aftermarket radio instead. That was a better resolution to it.
