This whole things about $20k plus for a new motor via the dealership is a bunch of BS. The dealership just wants to trick you into trading in your blown car for a new car. This makes them easily over $20k of profit. They sell you a new car for the usual profit. Then they put a new motor in your car for less than $5k most likely, and then sell that car for its high dealership used value. Go back to the dealership and tell the Service Advisor that you know what kind of B.S. he is trying to pull and that either they can be reasonable or you are taking your car elsewhere.

The dealership is not really trying to pull the wool over your eyes. If they look up the price of the engine in their system it will come up as over $20k. Go to any dealer and have them do it.

However, they can source a used engine and install it for much less.

Dealer parts departments always want to show a certain profit margin for the whole year, and in many cases don't adjust markup on expensive items. A good example of this is the SST in the Evo X. When I worked at a Mitsu dealer the MSRP on one of those was well over 18k just to buy the transmission!

Despite several requests, there is still no information on several things which would make this post much more reliable. We are missing information like A) how the engine popped. B) Were there any on-going issues with the motor prior to pop? C) What area is the OP from in the US? -- I am sure I am missing several other things.

I can confirm an MSRP significantly less than $20,000 ($7,673.71 in my area after taxes) Then, let's go ahead and add $3000 in labor and we stand at a little over $10,500 for the motor installed. This takes into account that even after you buy from the dealership, you aren't required to install it there so it could be even less expensive purchasing and installing else where.

Something just feels off about this post. Too many unknowns.

7353.61 from Subaru, but I believe the Toyota systems don't reflect the same prices.

Everything here just seems so whack. Kinda worries me thinking of what would happen if my babies engine ever blew, but at the same time I'd have no problem telling a dealer they were full of crap if they tried to pull that.

If you'd like I will get a quote from my dad tomorrow for parts and labor for this. He works as a parts manager at dealership.
