fr-s engine swap for less than $20k

recently the fa20 blew in my car and the dealership is asking 20k for another motor. i was thinking just change it up to a whole new motor. could this be done for less than 20 thousand or is it a long shot. thinking a v8 or 2j open to ideas. not sure what kind of money would go into getting that idea completed but any info from experience or other threads would help!:thanks:

I am curious what caused the motor to blow? Powertrain warranty expired / voided?

You can buy a used fa20 with under 10k miles for around 3-4k..

where does the fvcking dealer get off saying a new motor put in would cost 20K????

How is your dealer in business? If they think it will cost $20,000 to put in an OEM motor, they will be out of business fast than i can start one.

I didnt know the rest of the car only costed 5-6k...oh btw you should do a built shortblock (FBM or MAP) then FBM stage 1 or 2 heads then add whatever turbo kit you like. Thatll take up your $20g's nicely.

if your going to do an engine swap make sure you know someone and an inspector that will give you a sticker. my brother had that problem when he did a rb swap 300zx

Common sense should have kicked in and said wtf?? No way is stock motor anywheres near that fella. And why is this not being covered by warranty, where's rest of story here??

I saw some FR-S' on cars.com (the entire car) for less than $20k... LMAO!

you can score a crate LS3 for less than 8G's and then buy the complete LS conversion kit from Weapons Grade Performance for another 8g's.

Then you'd have a full reliable 430HP V8, with $4000 to go out on vacation with your girl in a V8 frs .... no way is the FA20/4UGSE 20 grand....

I believe this fully.. Im getting a motor with 8k miles put in my frs as I post this, due to water damage (hydro locked), because the dealer told me it would be 23k.. and another almost 25 for a new one. The reason I'm getting the used motor is b/c I know the owners of the dealership and it just so happened there was a totaled frs nearby with frame damage and no motor damage. So I get a newer motor for my deductible cost than I had previously, but its still bull that the dealers would try to charge the price of the car for a new motor, and in my case less than the car.

cdrazic93 08-09-2014 02:37 AM

Unless lamborgini developed this motor, there is no way in CJsporl1996's life that this motor is even worth 1/3 of that. Laugh, I say, literally laugh at their face. Call them on their BS, and talk to someone who knows the value of the actual damn car jesus.
