TLR.

OP, the car is new. There is still a growing community. What you're looking right now is a community that is heavily experienced and knows everyone who owns the FRS/BRZ just by looking at their plate.

You're not going to find that just yet. Give it time and you'll start enjoying it more.

As for people... I only know a few members that are really nice. There's plenty of shit talkers and people who are tough shit on this forum who own the car and come to meets. They're also little ***** shits when it comes to meeting them face to face. For you it might be easier to talk with people since you're a male; however, you'll still lots of people who have this "I'm the cool person and I want people to come up to me and talk to me. I don't want to be the 'uncool' person and go up to other people." There are A LOT of those types of people around.

Its worse for me because I'm not an import model or I don't have tits hanging out and my bare ass showing. I have met some really cool people who didn't give a shit. You meet one person and have a great time. Others will soon be looking. Once you get that you'll start making light jokes of each other and eventually more people won't have a problem approaching you.

Of course I've met up with a few forum members at event and I found them to be some of the most amazing people. They're sincere and humble. They also don't mind that I say something like it is.

Good luck OP. You might have to just suck it up and start heading out to meets and strike up small conversations.

I have to disagree a little (at least for me) - it's much easier to talk to a normal female/person, than a hot "import model" lol. I would never even talk to a hot model at a social setting because they usually get the wrong impression that guys are always hitting on them and are quick to throw a bad tude (I would though at a strip club...because "tits and bare ass" is delicious! hahaha). But of course if they're working as an "import model" of course they'd be forced to be nice, so that's different. But ya, I agree though that individuals are much more approachable once everyone is more relaxed....anyways, wtf am I talking about?? lol ...I haven't been to a car meet in 10-15 years lol. I think the last was for a silvia/240sx meet haha.

"I'm the cool person and I want people to come up to me and talk to me. I don't want to be the 'uncool' person and go up to other people."
I have to disagree with this too...depending on the situation/person. If the person is just really shy type, it doesn't necessarily mean the person is trying to be cool, tough, is a pssy sht (lol), etc..maybe he/she is jus shy n wants to kik it ...but of course, there's always the type as you described that's just trying to be cool, etc.

Lol. Its funny though. Its harder for girls definitely. Most guys that I've run into at meets won't talk to me because I'm not MAD CRAZY HOT. I should've said that instead of import model. rofl

Funny thing is... I went to the Import Tuner meet last year and a model was really nervous about me. She looked at me and then I smiled and waved at her. Total ice breaker. She almost went lesbian on me.

Anyways, this recent import tuner meet I overheard a model and I found it HILARIOUS of all the guys complimenting on the girls. The model said "Oh *hehehe* you must say that to all the models!" Implying they're trying to play favorites even though they are mad shit-talkers.

Also most import model now days are Vietnamese "coffee-shop" girls. Its this attitude everyone has... this... "I'm better than you and much higher in the cool scale than you are." In other words... a superiority complex.

Shit... you know what I do most of the time when I'm at meets?

I'm the person who likes to joke around with friend's cars. And I don't mind saying hello.

I think you look cute! Surprised more guys don't talk to you.

It IS awkward being a girl and going to a car event alone, though. I feel like guys don't expect you to be there by yourself if you aren't there working*, so there's definitely some reluctance there. And it's hard if you're trying to learn/just getting into cars/NOT looking for a date. I definitely have to work up the courage to go alone since my boyfriend is not super social. I've met some nice people though!

* Edited to add, I posted this before I went to local Cars and Coffee. At the event, had some guys talking to me about my car. To be fair, I was dressed for work (read overdressed for Cars and Coffee), but they definitely asked me if I worked for a dealership after I talked for a few minutes about the car.

I don't understand why some people think that owning the same car as others automatically makes them an interesting person.

You just do this in every thread, go around placing un necessary judgment on others. Where is the value in a response like this. Sounds more like you have a chip on your shoulder. Maybe you should take some of your own advice. BTW, I highlighted and underlined it to really make my POINT, and for effect!

This. Oh god this.

It's the one side of the NZ owners club I don't like. It's like its imagined that we all had no friends before owning this car, and now we all should be friends.

In NZ the car is quite expensive, $40k at least. Thats a shit load of money in this country. And our economy/financial system here doesn't encourage low/no equity financing; so the 22 year old flat peakers here are stuck in their s-chassis's.

I live in Christchurch, population about 350k or thereabouts, and there is maybe one other owner my age (early 30's) with a gt86. He's an okay dude, don't have a bad thing to say about him. I wouldn't say we're instant best friends just because we both bought gt86's. The rest of the owners in this city have either had their car bought for them by their parents, or are 50+.

All my car friends are mechanics, fabricators, and the like. None of them can afford a gt86. They are all into drifting though. And I'm much more likely to be friends with someone via drifting, than because they own a gt86.

I'd like it if there were more like minded people locally. But realistically, for me that will only happen as the imports start coming in from Japan in the next couple of years, and they're half the price. (We get ALOT of 2nd hand imports from Japan here).

Theres a gt86 specific drift club online that is a good group. For broader technical stuff I come to this forum.

The Norcal scene is great. Everyone I've met and spoken with has been nice and willing to share. I've bought parts, and everyone has been honest. We have amazing tuners and speed shops in the area. I don't make it to events because of work, but the one time I organized a small event, several people came and had fun.

My biggest problem with the scene is that I tend to only have cars in common with people. Then with my other friends, none of them like cars. I somehow straddle two different social groups, not fully belonging in either.

The patience part struck a chord with me, I don't really try to talk cars anymore except with friends and people who's opinions I respect. Every conversation with another "enthusiast" always turns to "what have you done what are you going to do with your FRS" and my only response is "drive it until I burn out the tires then I'll get stickier ones, and brake pads"

I have no illusions of being a racecar driver anymore, the car is far more capable than I am, I don't need to shave 15 lbs off by buying a new set of wheels, I need to drive it and figure out what the car needs first.

why this doesnt happen with every single person who has ever driven a street car is beyond me.

I don't even have a community here lol. I was invited to a meet in Dallas a few weeks ago but something came up and I couldn't make it. The only people here in Tyler I know want me to either roll cage/camber/"JDM DUDE!" the car or they couldn't care less about it because it can't beat their suped-up WRX or S2k. I'll be driving to Florida in early July, hoping to find a meet or two on the way or once I get there.

We get that a lot in the military, too. "You're from California? I'm from California too! We should hang out!"

Just... no. California has 37M people; being Californian is not a deciding factor in friendship.

Or "You were at Base X? Do you know John?"

... nope.

Fucking awesome you dropped this. The point I'm getting at is that it would be cool to have at least a couple buddies with the same chassis. I have other 'car-guy' friends who drive different vehicles. We were buddies before we got into cars. In an ideal world wouldn't it be cool to have a buddy with the same car? Most of my 'car-guy' friends are my friends because we tackle the hobby in the same way and place value on the same areas of our vehicles...but t the end of the day it would be awesome to say/ "Look man these PBM LCAs aren't doing it for me. You wanna try them out? I'll rock your Cusco ones."

You can wrench on each other's cars together even if you have different cars but (240 owners can attest) that working on two of the same cars makes everything faster. You 'learn' on one, and then tackle the other.

Pure bromance.

That's funny you say this because I hate this about the military. I guess I want a touch of it in the car community, though.
