I'm a couple of years older than you, I also live with my parents, but that's because I'm saving 500 a week to buy a house. I have the savings to buy a GTS outright (assuming reasonable price), but I'm buying a GT on loan to get credit rating and because I can keep my saving rate while paying the loan off.

yes yes - i doubt most 86/brz buyers will be making use of their back seats often though.

Those are all good points. I'm in a similar situation to davey. Doesn't the "fuck it! Do it while you're young" factor come in to play at all here? It certainly does for me.

There isn’t anything comparable to this for $40k new. No light weight, RWD sports coupes. At all.
Maybe some sport FWD’s.
And in regards to value against a WRX.. It’s a totally different car. I have no want of AWD turbo, high centre of gravity sedan. If this car was $50k I wouldn’t buy a WRX. Again, comes down to your wants.

As to a price cap... I dunno. I keep telling myself $35k, but we will see. I won’t spend above $40k. And that has nothing to do with the WRX pricing :P

I understand that, and I've done it a lot myself. But this is where "buyers remorse" comes from.

Also remember that a couple of years is a short amount of time, and you'll still be young.

Cool cool. A lot of other people have told me the same thing. And it is good advice. Anyone in a similar position should definitely have a long hard think about whether it's worth it for them.

yeah... I know where you're coming from, the amount of money I can pull out now is better on a house then on a car then again, houses can also be a deprecating value. Credit ratings? check! my credit ratings are pretty stable, so this new loan will add on =P.

If i decide to buy my price cap is $33k for the GT.

Not really interested in the GTS but if it was around 36k on road i would consider it.

Nearly brought 2 other cars but the sales fell thru, and with this 3-4th july thingy happening ill wait now.

Ok... so i have looked through these posts. You guys are dedicated fans of 86, toyota's market.

(all prices for car i have changed to gt model (people that said gts i took 4k off))

Now 12 people gave a ceiling, 4 people were $40k or above.
Now lets say the Cost of the car was $25k (toyota austs cost)
and they chose to sell the car for 40k they would sell 4 of them to us, 8 would say no way. "profit" of 15k per sale = 60k
if they chose to sell it at the lowest price ceiling here. 33k they would sell 12 cars @ a "profit" of 8k per car= 96k profit...

now "profit" was clearly an indication on not a number...

what do u guys think ?

I like where you are going with this. 40k for me is absolute maximum, and even then i may decide later that it is too much.

If its too exxy, I might buy a scirocco r, keep it for 3 years then buy a used 86 or new facelifted 86. By then there will be discount!!

I haven't decided on which model I want yet, I guess it depends on price.
If GTS is less than $38k that's what ill be going for, otherwise GT for me which I'm expecting to be about $33-35k
