After that it will belong to insurance. Doesn't matter what it is as long as the original part is put back on. You can remove silly things as well and they won't care (Floor mats, unoticeable interior trim pieces).
So much this. It's unbelievable how much the people that towed my car tried to fight me over taking things off of the car despite replacing them with the OEM parts.. In the end state farm reimbursed me for the stuff I couldn't remove, but had a receipt for.

Not to get too far off topic, but did you have to pay extra for your insurance for them to cover your aftermarket parts, since you had the receipts for all of it?

They are able to accurately determine such things without inspecting the vehicle directly?

I have receipts for everything I put on the car. I talked to the Geico guy and he said that if it is totaled, they would most likely pay for the aftermarket parts near full value. Do you think I should leave them on?

But, if you take them off and Geico does pay for them, its insurance fraud.

OP, get their statement in writing and leave the parts on the car. That way you have a commitment from them that they have to follow through on.

Its not insurance fraud if you replace what you take off with the original. Essentially the car should contain the factory parts or they will remove it from their estimate (If a nav is missing etc)
