Safe speed =/= speed limit in a lot of cases. It's whatever's safe for the driving conditions. I see people barreling 65mph down the freeway in the fog with 10-feet of visibility--that's suicide, speed limit or not. If there's enough gravel to send off into a tree and you don't see it in time to react, chances are you're going to fast irrespective of the posted limit. A dip in the road upsetting the chassis, or a crest that unloads the rear tires--those are things that can countered--namely, by slowing down. Not trying to be critical, just that most accidents--even if caused by inclement circumstance--can be avoided. |

Spot on! I've seen oil on the road at the end of a freeway offramp going into an off cambered turn.
Everyone including old grannies in corollas were sliding all over the place or spinning out. The first rain after a dry spell causes a lot of oil and residue to float up out of the road and makes for hazardous conditions. Couple this with an off bump and pretty pedestrian driving can quickly turn to shit. |

In this situation all the oils on the road suddenly come to the surface and the road becomes like ice. Hit a dip or suddenly brake, and off the road you go! If it hasn't rained for a while and it does, drive like you are in a snow storm..cut the speed and no quick changes. |

This! The first bit of rain after a dry spell can make for road conditions that rival the infamous "black ice".

I just wanted to point this out... you dont start a thread telling everyone about how skillful you are and your racing history only to finish it with "I was driving normally down some back roads and totaled my car"
Just sayin... Anyways sorry about your 86... I would cry if it was mine, glad to know how safe these cars are tho. Dont think theres been any serious injuries in all the totalled 86s ive seen. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk 2

People assume that flipping a car over requires excessive speed and a major blunder. I have seen a car flip at walking speed, back over front, when clipped by a truck and catching the curb on the opposite side. Things happen.
