Or the Mazda RX-7
Hmm the Scion FR-S looks great too.

Bro, no way an RX-7 is going to be cheap...think well over $30k price...same thing with the Honda S2500. Still cheap for a real sports car. But a new S16 would be priced well below the 370z and would approach the FR-S\BRZ pricing.

I am all for more cheap FR sports cars.

Am I the only guy who thought the s2000 was overpriced? 34k base is insane for that car.

It was and It wasn't, compared to many sports cars it was perceived to be low on power. but it handled great and was actually pretty powerful when compared to other roadsters.

That's a big part of why there is no 2010+ S2000, they weren't commercially successful. In fact, many "low" power sports cars have suffered that fate. Many modern day consumers like big HP #'s and impressive acceleration times.

The ft86 will likely receive a similar reception, many people here still think it is low on power for its price and this is on the fan site...

IF the ft86 does well we may see a resurgence of the small sports coupe, however I doubt it will happen. The ft86 will do well enough I'm sure. But as far as I can tell this as much of a pet project car as it is an attempt at re-engineering what makes a sports car fun. I don't think this car will rob many customers form the traditional sports car market.

@SUB-FT86: You're not the only guy who thought that. But I would not agree with you (or them). I mean, show me how you could build such a car for less.

BTW, in reality, you could get them for less without much struggle. When I bought mine, there were 4-digit factory incentives. Also, my dealer had five new ones on the lot, all of them black. So, you might say he was willing to make a deal.

It was a bit overpriced...yes. Did Honda even update the car much in its 10 year run? NO. They simply gave up. You don't see BMW giving up on the Z4 or Audi giving up on the TT or even Nissan giving up on the Z car. You just keep making the car better. You don't give up like Honda did on the Prelude, Integra, Legend Coupe, S2000, NSX, and CRX.

Sure you can say it was economics...but Porsche and BMW have always had sports cars, and always will even in the bad times.

Honda lost its way a long time ago. It's not too late. Look at Toyota, they came back! And Toyota, don't give up! We all know the AS1 is not going to sell 25k units a year. That's OK! Your trying to build upon the legend that is the AE86. The sales will come if you continually improve upon your product. Don't let it stagnate on the market.

Sorry, but BMW completely gave up with the Z4. It has the same name, but the Z4 E89 has nothing to do with the Z4 E85/E86. The new one feels so heavy, is so far from being nimble, it is more a GT than a sportscar. And the Z2 that had to be a Z3 revival, till today did not come to life and I doubt it will because it won't sell and BMW now only build cars that sell and no more that are the ultimate driving machine.

BMW has no more sportscar except the 1M, they ask 50.000 € for it, and other than the new M2 they won't have any!

But the biggest difference is that the FR-S will be around 11k cheaper with 40 less horsepower. The FR-S is actually going to be more worth the money IMHO.

This is true. This opens up an entirely new market. Generally lower 20s were not able to afford a brand new S2000, but can now afford a FR-S.

It's true, the current Z4 is a bloated overweight overpriced GT chick car, and the previous E85/E86 was a fantastic & fun sports car. BMW has really lost the plot with sports cars anywhere resembling small, light, fun, and kind of affordable. I don't see them looking down their noses enough to bother observing the 86's success.

On a different but on-topic note: I've heard from industry friends that the next-gen Ford Mustang will be noticeably smaller than the current beast.

Agreed...but they still make the car, therefore they did not give up completely.

Yeah the Z4 is 3549 pounds, pretty heavy...but it has a powered hardtop that's why. It still has the BMW 50/50 weight distribution.

The next version of the M3 is rumored to have a triple turbo V6 and lighter weight.

No, I got confirmation, the engine is going to be an S55, 3.0l I6 twinturbocharged with more electrically driven "turbo" and will develop 440 PS (more for the M4), the engine being based on the N55 though compltely moddified. However indeed it will weigh at least 50 kg less than the current one.

Has Ford learned nothing from the Mustang II debacle?

A lot of cars that have been mentioned are not cheap FR cars. So my answer is no to the original post. My guess is FR 2+2 coupe have a small market share and it will die out within 5 years.
