I think you just nailed it. I looked up a handful of threads from people talking about their rear axle clicking and the noises they've recorded are identical to mine both in sound and the situations they hear them in. The only question is whether it's just a loose axle nut or whether my axle is fucked from being on lowering springs. What are the chances the CV joint or entire axle is going bad at 20k miles (5k on lowering springs)?

I saw someone switched their axle nuts from left to right, I might try that before ordering the part online idk. I could also try re-torquing my spacers.

I don't think it's a CV joint. They make a completely different sound when they start failing. It's a much more forceful and cyclic snap-snap-snap... as each ball pops back into place.

I just re-torqued the spacers and wheels, no luck there. Also torqued the axle nuts to 150lb even though it probably won't move because of the notch. Sound is still there. Guess I'll order some and replace those myself.

Gotta lift the material where it's peened really well or you'll fuck up the threads on your spindle. I did it when I was younger and less patient.

Yes but once you lift the tab enough you might choose instead to turn it clockwise a little.

That's what I'm thinking. That little crimp is amazingly effective. There's no way it would've allowed you to torque the nut any higher.

I know it's a single-use item but it's reasonable to crank on it just a little and re-crimp (peen... whatever the correct term)

Alright I'll give that a try next time I have a chance to get the car up. Wasn't sure if I could get away with using them a second time.

You aren't removing them and mixing them up. The crimp will be in a new spot. The main reason for using a new one is to avoid trying to crimp the same buggered up strip of steel.

It is better to use a new one but its ok to add extra torque to the old one if that's all you're doing.

Man I really tried to get that nut to move but I can't. It looks like it's uncrimped but I have a feeling it's not since I can compress the suspension halfway just from how hard I'm pulling on the torque wrench. I don't have an impact gun either. Wondering if I should just make the dealer do it when I bring it in for the 18k service in a couple weeks.

I mistakenly assumed the dealer wasn't an option. Yeah, don't mess with it unless you're absolutely confident that you have it lifted AND you feel safe performing the task. You have to get underneath the crimp with a dull narrow chisel that fits into that groove.

Like I warned earlier, don't force it or you will thoroughly fuck up the threads on the spindle.

Crimp it back down and have the dealer replace the nut.

I think the important take-away here is seeing why that nut is a single-use item. Can't lift and crimp the same spot repeatedly.
