Clutch creaking noise (not the clutch fork one...)

I've recently started hearing a creaking noise coming from under the car while I'm driving. It only happens when I let out the clutch pedal to finish a gear change. The creaking doesn't relate to the pedal travel and I don't hear it at all when the car is not moving under load. No noise is heard when the car is off.

The noise has something to do with the car going into gear and I'm wondering of it's some sort of TOB issue that I need to have checked out. I'd take a video of the noise but it's hard to do while driving and the noise is somewhat unpredictable - it doesn't happen on every gear change and I usually only hear it in lower gears. It sounds like a metal creaking/squeaking - nothing like the usual clutch fork squeaks that people such as myself have been complaining about.

Any ideas?

I wouldn't call it a grinding, more like a clicking that sounds borderline like a creak. I'll hear one or two clicks and then the car is in gear and it's fine. No abnormal sounds afterwards. The sound is definitely coming from under the car too, its not any switch or mechanical stuff inside the cabin.

Oh, I'll put my money on a TOB going bad.

@Ultramaroon ....... thoughts .. ??

No, based on description, not TOB. Unfortunately, I dunno. Not obvious.

When my TOB went out, it did squeal while driving and clutch was disengaged, but it also squealed (and hard) when parked. Just throwing my experience out there.

Would it help if you could hear the sound? I might be able to get it with my GoPro

Potentially, yes. But I'm guessing none of us wanted to put you on the spot given its intermittent nature.

...the sound, I mean, not your GoPro.

yuk yuk

There was too much wind noise mounting the camera on the body of the car, but once I put it in the cabin with my window down I finally captured the sound. After going though the recording I noticed it seems to happen most predictably going in and out of 1st gear, and when I let off the gas in a low gear.

Do you have a short shifter installed ...??

It sounds like the shifter linkage or the shift gate is lose .....:iono:

Nope, all my shifter hardware is stock except a Perrin RLO but that's been on the car for over 25k miles already. I even use the stock shfter knob.

Is it possible anything could have come loose on its own over time?

That's possible. I don't know of any easy way to check the linkage, short of taking out the console.

Any other ideas out there ...... ??

Is there anything I can do to test this theory before I rip out the console?
