There was an old issue with the turbo AVCS motors with the small screen filters they used in the AVCS oil lines where they would clog and cause rough idle and worse blown turbos due to oil starvation since the turbo was fed by the same lines and also had a filter. They removed them later on and issued a TSB which recommended removing them but never a recall. The old AVCS ports are very tiny in size but I don't know about the FA20 ones. Some background the AVCS is all oil pressure actuated and used special cam sprockets.

Have those experiencing the issue later on done oil changes? I know many are having the issue right away which makes me think manufacturing defect, at least in those cases.

Technically there are probably more than a few seals which are supposed to be replaced but I always ended up reusing on the EJ257 without an issue.

Field Technical Service (think FTS was the acronym) guy is now 14 minutes late. Subaru doesn't value my time, it seems. Cranky. Not an auspicious beginning to this meeting.

Update:

I just stopped by the dealership to find out that they broke the fuel line in my car while fixing it or else it would have been ready last week. ETA on the fuel line is Sept 8 (I dropped my car off Aug 7). When I asked if anyone was going to take responsibility for the mistake, they told me that it's not them, that these things happen all the time. Thoughts? Advice?

Aren't they taking responsibility already by fixing it?

Yeah I suppose, and I'm stuck waiting another 2-3 weeks in addition to the 2 weeks I had already waited because of it.

FTS was 21 minutes late. That might not seem like a big deal, just to say it. Oh, he was 21 minutes late, what are you wailing about, you big baby. Bluh bluh bluh.

I disagree. The customer's time is more valuable than yours, always. Don't waste their time. I agreed to be at a place at a time, and made the appropriate arrangements on my end. Subaru not holding up their end of the bargain seems to be emerging as a common theme in this experience.

Allegedly my car was close to being finished late this afternoon, and will be returned to me "tomorrow" pending successful road testing. But, you know, gosh, I can't seem to shake this feeling that I've hear that somewhere before...

Tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow...and tomorrow never comes.

There seems to be every chance the car will just throw a CEL again at the first traffic light. And to think, I only even have this opportunity -- that is, I only even have the parts -- because I've been micromanaging both Subaru NA customer service and my dealership. With the number of times and variety of ways in which they've made mistakes which impact the project completion timeline, I am utterly convinced I'd be another three weeks out had I not spent hours of my time intervening.

That isn't cool. More of my time, wasted.

For what it's worth, the FTS seemed like a mostly reasonable sort of dude, but didn't seem particularly motivated to do anything about the chirp. He said he'd listen, but that if he determines it's "normal operation," there would be no additional action from him. He's there to examine the CEL and exhaust cam issues.

I was about to get a bit more forceful with him until I realized that his role is merely to assess the design as it is, not to pass judgment on whether the design is defective.

So, that makes sense, even if it's disappointing. I suspect I'll be having to battle customer service for some time, which is regrettable. It shouldn't need to go so far. The issue is obvious.

The chirp is clear as day, huge spike between 5-5.5k on the FFT of some audio data I recorded. Little bit of energy up around 8ishk and 10ishk as well...with the bulk down between 0-1k, which is more what one would expect.

The chirp is plainly audible as we all know. Isolating the 5-5.5k band is amusing. It sounds even more like crickets, if you can imagine.

So just as an FYI...i went over 1100 miles last night (check engine light came on at 132) and while driving with my new Nameless Exhaust the CEL/Sl blinked once and went out...thinking this was a fluke (still kinda do) i didnt say anything...i have now gone another 100 miles with it off and no problems. Not sure what that means but putting it out there anyways.

Edit: That is i was driving with it on for 1000+ miles and no negative effects and then it cleared itself.

Just received a call from corporate. ETA on the o-ring is now 8/31. Thats a Friday so that means install Monday and optest Tuesday or Wednesday. I'm looking at another week or more without my car. At least corporate agreed to some compensation. I'm not sure yet what that will be.

I just got off the phone with them too, no ETA for me on the engine gaskets. I'm almost glad, by the time they get those parts, I'll be eligible for the WA lemon law buyback.

On the other hand it sounded like they would take care of me if I decide to keep the car. I may, dependent on how the warranty work affects the value of the car, if it even does.

I should start picking stocks and buying lotto tickets, because I was right: they took it for a road test and it threw a CEL again.

Get this: they're going to replace the ECU, and it's..."at least 14 days." I was too angry to even ask if that's business days.

Livid. Just livid. I'll be over a month without my car when all is said and done, and that's if the ECU even resolves the issue.

I guess there's one way to make the CEL go away: install an updated ECU that never illuminates the CEL...

I'm sorry, this is an o-ring? That long? What?!

Have they never heard of McMaster-Carr? Parker Hannifin? I could cut a damn mold for an o-ring and shoot parts for you before 8/31. I would flip.

Hang on a second, from what I understand, you already had parts replaced and it's still giving the CEL?

I'm gonna crawl through your other posts now, but I think that's all the evidence I need to go with the lemon law on this one.
