You think Celica is the only sensible option? What if they named it Supra, is it not sensible? First gen Supra was NA: 5M-E and curb weight was around 1270kg (iirc).

Supra was always a Z car rival, it was just so good at what it did, it became a GT-R rival as well.

Good point. I guess, true Supra fan will be disappoint if new Supra came with NA.

It's sad Supra, but GT-R's rival is Porsche. Like MatadorRacing said, it's always Supra vs Fairlady. GT-R vs Porsche (why Porsche? idk). Also Mark and Chaser (GS, LS, IS and other series) rival is BMW.

Also I highly doubt they gonna use Inline 6 anymore (even though I love the i6 exhaust notes). GT-R gave up and went with v6. I'm guessing next Supra will be v6 or v8 TT.

I usually see Skyline and Supra competing with each other, They also are tuned monsters, and 6 cylinder TT. and I think Z and Caymen are rivals.
If Next Gen Supra uses technologies from LFA, that car is another supercar beater.

Back in 70's yes, Porsche and Fairlady was rivals, but Skyline took over and now Porsche and Skyline are the rivals.

That is an opinion limited to American car forums. Even in its most recent FF set-up the Celica remains very well-liked everywhere else in the world.

Sure it got some flack for the so called "Secretary Transport" variant of the early '90's, but again that was primarily a US thing (they barely even relased the Alltrac/GT-4 here, which was available then). The "stigma" is quite limited and very local.

Do people hate the RSX-S just as much? What about the Integra? The motors in those cars make power a little easier than the 2ZZ, but it's basically the same damn type of vehicle (in fact, the last gen Celica was specifically desgined to compete with the last gen 'teg).

All three of these light weight, sporty FF coupes offer excellent handling and braking, and a high revving fuel efficient motor with adequate top end output. They even have similar body styles! So why is the Celica the ugly sister of the bunch?

You are dead wrong if you think Toyota will lose more customers than they pick up using the Celica nameplate.

As noted by Matador, you need to drop a 6-cyl in FT-86 and build it to overtake the latest Z -- that might be done with the FT-86 chassis down the road, but the name Supra would would be all wrong for this car as it stands.
