5w40 probably not the best choice if your seeing temps below zero regularly but still in the recomended operating range.

you manual may be different not sure 0w20 prefered for max economy and in colder climates.

Obliged! I'm a little urked that the guy suggested 5w40 to me at the end of November, but I'll be ok. I'll just make sure to warm my car up properly before opening her up. In DC it does drop below 0 celsius on and off over the winter, but not a great deal below and not for very often.
