Found the law.
The problem was that the guys wanted white fogs and they can only be red and the center light is too low according to the law.

24602. (a) A vehicle may be equipped with not more than two red fog taillamps mounted on the rear which may be lighted, in addition to the required taillamps, only when atmospheric conditions, such as fog, rain, snow, smoke, or dust, reduce the daytime or nighttime visibility of other vehicles to less than 500 feet.

(b) The lamps authorized under subdivision (a) shall be installed as follows:

(1) When two lamps are installed, one shall be mounted at the left side and one at the right side at the same level and as close as practical to the sides. When one lamp is installed, it shall be mounted as close as practical to the left side or on the center of the vehicle.

(2) The lamps shall be mounted not lower than 12 inches nor higher than 60 inches.

(3) The edge of the lens of the lamp shall be no closer than four inches from the edge of the lens of any stoplamp.

(4) The lamps shall be wired so they can be turned on only when the headlamps are on and shall have a switch that allows them to be turned off when the headlamps are on

Thanks for the info, only thing is when I do the electrical mods I prefer not to splice. I would rather build a harness so I can swap to OEM if I had to. Plus it's much cleaner. Thanks for the law I'm going to measure the light

Nsidious makes a plug and play harness with bulb. all you need to do is drill a hole in the housing. although it's a bit expensive, it's as PnP as you can get. you just connect a plug between the OEM harness to tail light and find a ground.

Hmmm maybe we need a rant thread for ranting about rants. Could get as confusing as hell though.

One of the rear crash test criteria is that a car should only sustain $XXX (I don't remember the actual dollar value) in a 10mph crash. The bumper skin is designed to absorb most of the force/damage at that low speed and protect the operating parts of the car. Exhaust that protrudes out too far beyond the skin can take the brunt of the force before it is absorbed by the bumper skin. If the exhaust takes the full force it is far more than just some bent tips you are looking at. The force can be transmitted all the way forward and wipe out the exhaust, header, block, wiring and other critical components.
It was this simple 10mph front crash rule that kept the Evos out of Canada up until the X because the old intercooler set up would not survive even a low speed crash and the repairs were above the value threshold.

Oh and yes people could get burned and sue I suppose.

Funny, we had a Saab 900 and a 9-3, both with rear fog lights, for a combined total of 15 years. We probably only used the rear fog lights a couple of times. In all those years, I never noticed that there was only one light, that it was on the left and that it was red! Must have been the only bulb on either of those cars that didn't burn out! (I've never owned a car on which I had to replace bulbs more often than those damned Funny Swedish Cars).

For cars only equipped with one rear fog light, according to the EU it has to be either center mounted or on the driver side (I retrofitted this onto my previous Golf GTI and the rear fog light replaced the driver side reverse light, popped in an European light switch, rewired it underneath the dash, and reprogrammed the car computer with VAGCOM).

Also for EU countries if cars are equipped with HID headlights, they need headlight washers and auto leveling to mitigate glare in the event they get dirty. The twins will have these features stock when sold in Europe.

I thought about adding the OEM rear fogs to the BRZ but the wiring harness from the dash to the fuse / relay box just simply doesn't have the wiring for it in place like the RoW cars. In Japan this is an option that can be added since the wiring is already there.
