only 1000$? Jeez, the dealership itemized it to be 1600$ and asked me to be grateful when they said it wasn't covered by my warranty but they wouldn't charge me (before the work they said it WAS covered).. The crickets went away for about 30 minutes. |

Give it a try. It's free if you already have the oil. The worst that can happen is it doesn't work. I carry one of those small (4.5-5oz) Lucas additive bottles with 2-stroke oil in it. I use ~1/2 of a bottle (2oz) per fill up, and it works for me. The Lucas did make a difference, but didn't kill them...just dumbed them down a bit. It doesn't seem to matter if the 2-stroke oil is TCW-3 or not. I started out using Shell TCW-3 oil, then switched to whatever oil I had on hand for my snowmobile. Ipone, Royal Purple 2C, and now Motul 710...they all work. At the end of the day, the crickets won't hurt anything. It's just a noise (still drives me freakin' nuts though). Quote:
E0 works for me too. Some people have said it doesn't work for them. So many people in the cricket threads have said "well I tried Shell 91 and the crickets are worse than ever", but I think a lot of them missed the point...just because Shell 91 is E0 in this area doesn't mean it is E0 across the board. I wish there was a way to know if the naysayers have actually had E0 in their tank. I really thought that ethanol was the key until people running E85 started saying "crickets? what crickets?". LOL at charm. This car has a lot of charms, crickets ain't one of 'em.

Mine went away 100% of the time as soon as I started filling up with 91/93 octane PURE gasoline with 0% ethanol. If I go back to a regular US mandated 10% ethanol the crickets return as soon as it clears the fuel line.
Every "86 friend" I have met, I tell them to try it and they all come back saying it fixed it. The problem is this gas is about $1 more a gallon. Other than killing the crickets, the tiny fuel economy/performance bump isnt enough to justify the price hike. Can we kill ethanol in the US already? Or at least bring it down to 5%, where I have found the crickets dont come out to play except on the hottest of days... |

I think the crickets do truly have charm. Accepting them with a healthy sense of humour helps me bond with the car.
