Need to define "a long period of time" really. Five minutes? Twenty? Three hours?

Really? I hear conflicting views on this. Some people say that you should let it warm up a little for if it's really cold out while others say that you are just wasting gas and that newer cars do not need to do this. I personally let it warm up for 5-10 minutes in the morning while I make breakfast and when I drive, the shifting is a lot smoother. When I don't, however, it's really rigid when shifting. My guess is that the fluids are not properly ready throughout the car but I could be wrong. Still, I prefer getting in my car when it's not ball-shrinking cold, regardless if it may take off a few miles off of my car's lifespan lol.

I agree with Mr Stanley. I let mine warm up for 3-5 minutes. It drives much better after warming up. When it's cold it sounds weird and it actually seems to affect performance for the first few minutes.

![]() I usually let my car finish its start up dance, then just move on slowly, till I get out of the subdivision (a few blocks) and then keep it under about 4,000 RPMs till I get to the grocery store (or doctors office or bank), in a couple of miles. Then on the way home it's "hammer down", as I blow past a few old ladies in Buicks and housewives in mini-vans ...... ![]() humfrz |

But... when covered in ice and snow I will let it sit and warm up at least 10 minutes to make scrapping much easier. Don't think it hurts anything as some people can sit in traffic for longer periods.

Idling doesn't hurt a modern engine much. I work with a lady that left hers running from 5am till 5pm with no ill effects. She just got out of the car and went in to the shop forgetting to turn it off.

I am getting the viper 5706v installed in my FR-S. It is a remote start and security system.

I have a compustar slice jr in my brz. All of the ranges say "up to" a certain foot range. If it's advertised as a mile, you'll expect half of that. Don't go by the advertised distance.
Viper and compustar can both be installed on a manual transmission. It's not a big deal these days. |
