My experience with powerful cars has shown me that the rubber compound is more important than width. For example I had more grip with an NT01 245width which is 100 treadwear rating than an NT05 275width which is 200 treadwear rating. Width does help though and not everyone wants to drive around the street on R compounds. I don't supose the stock FRS/BRZ axles will last long with a V8 and sticky tire.
