If rumors are true, we'd have a turbo 2.5 convertible FR-S :P

im not going into the whole turbo debate, but the reason why no convertible is because Subaru doesnt want to built.

Was hesitant on dropping this bombshell but I can't contain it anymore.

It's finally proof, the death of the hated boxer engine will result in the return of the Supra with a BMW I6, this of course will slot in much higher than the current Toyobaru leaving a hole in the sub $30k market.

The solution is obvious, it was hinted at years ago when the development was revealed and talked about:

The return of the rotary: Mazda's 16x will finally hit the road, the GT86-R will be the next generation and Mazda will finally deliver an RX-9. This would have been the original plan but the bean counters invested in Fuji instead of Mazda forcing Toyota's development team to compromise, only now do they realize their mistake after several years of difficult relations. Add in Mazda's considerable experience with roadsters and four doors that are actually fun to drive and the platform will finally expand the way the marketing department always dreamed.

It's as good as guaranteed. Source:

It just makes sense no way around it.

Subaru has been paid off, they've got their return on investment they're just waiting out the contract and they've got a shiny new DIT engine out of it in exchange for a capable RWD chassis their marketing department doesn't even know how to sell.

Mark my words, Subaru has already sent the drawings to Mazda and BMW and they're just waiting for the word to box up the tooling to clear floor space to make more Forresters.

As long as Mazda doesn't make the RX-9 with giant horse nostrils and an overused rotor motif, it should be good. And it should be turbocharged, in true rotary fashion.

I understand Toyota is not entirely happy about the joint venture with Subaru. The problem is primarily related to the (lack of) product quality and high production cost. But Toyota cannot do it alone, because of its inability to mass manufacture a H4 engine.

Capacity is also an issue. In other Toyota plants, several models are usually built at the same time and therefore, the production line is flexible to switch among difference models. In this case, this is an orphan model. Toyota paid for the tooling and fixed cost of the Toybaru production line, in exchange for getting most of the output. This production line cannot be used for anything else, so an increase in production capacity represents a high risk for Toyota. Toyota wanted to introduce more models, eg, 4-door and a convertible, in order to justify building another production line. But Subaru is not excited about this, and there is physically no room at the plant for another production line.

That means Toyota may not want to repeat the current set-up for the 2nd gen FT-86. But that doesn't mean the Toybaru will die prematurely.

Sounds shitty, but I hope they do away with the boxer. It would be nice to have a "limited edition car" I'm in love with my car and I have always been concerned with it becomeing the next civic. This just might save it.
