Garage
Toyota on the Park is $61.25 taxes in for oil changes, they're generally really fast too.

For what oil/filter/washer costs, I can't be bothered to do them myself.

IMO, the primary issue with oil is when it gets dirty. A good synthetic could probably go 10,000+ miles as long as you kept it clean (see running it in a closed, low dirt environment).
Anyone that tracks their car regularly should also look at Motul (or equivalent) oils. I'm not too worried because I go through km's really fast (hit 60k km's last week, bought July 2012) I typically only get one or two track events in an oil change interval.

Seems everyone here is giving you Toyota/Scion prices. I have been going to the dealer for all three of my oil changes. Subaru has charged me about $90 all in each time.

It is pretty simply to do yourself, but by the time you buy everything, do the change yourself, and then find a place to dispose of the old oil, to me its worth it to go to the dealer

I dunno... $60 is $60.

Napa syn oil at $3.49 a quart and a quality filter = about $30.

Leaving $60 to justify the time and effort involved. I think I'll stick with doing it myself.

I can certainly understand why someone would take it to the dealer - it is a bit of a hassle (although less so in the twins than many other cars because of the oil filter location)... but then I hear the occasional story of the dealer putting the wrong amount in.

Having worked at a dealer for 18 months, I can't say that I was that impressed with their mechanics... but obviously that's going to vary from dealer to dealer.

There's probably a million reasons and brand isn't the only factor.

Oil is put through a variety of tests. Those test results, depending on your needs, are the particular reasons why people will pick one oil over another. The make up of the oil (what it's made of/with) is also a big factor. Followed by cost.

Here's a good read:
http://www.amsoil.com/performancetests.aspx

Amsoil runs a ton of tests independently and to prove they are unbiased, they don't always come out on top. For me, it's these benchmarks that helped solidify the reason I run the 0W20 Signature Series in my FR-S and the OE in our other cars.

I, like many here, also run Motul in the driveline as I've had great success with it over the years in various motorsports related vehicles. Sometimes it just comes down to that. I trust Motul and Amsoil, so I run them. I don't trust Royal Purple because I've had it eat the syncros out of a transmission and burn off in an engine that didn't consume oil using any other brand but RP. Those few bad experiences mean I'll never use it for anything I own, not even my lawnmower.

The blue subaru filter is actually made in USA and only costs half as much as the black one that's made in Japan. And it cheaper to buy filters from Subaru dealerships than Toyota ones for some reason. I use ENEOS too.

I have a wholesale account with Amsoil, so I buy direct. Anyone can set up an account though.

Amsoil OE is like $60/case with tax for 12qts.
