Just because your car is worth $x on trade does not guarantee that a dealer will pay what you want for it. They only buy trades to mark them up and turn a profit. How much profit exactly depends on their greed. The only way to get the full value back out of your car is to sell it yourself. If you trade it in, the loss you will take is the price you pay for that convenience.

The whole point of that process is to take a good running vehicle off your hands, and YOU the buyer won't have to go through the process of trying to sell it on your own. The dealer often will just take the car and sell it on the wholesale market to other used car dealers. Trade-in value is usually a lot less than what you'd see on the private seller used car market, especially if the car is not something the dealer sells new originally. -alex |

If he does trade in he pays less in taxes. This can make it worth trading in for less than the "best" price. |

OP - Yes, this was at Cherokee County Toyota north of Atlanta. They still have a few 2013 FR-S... and as I said they still have the two that were there when I bought mine in June. I believe they have been there since the FR-S was released. So they really will want to offload them. Internet price shows them at $23k MT and $24 AT. I'm sure they'd knock off more, say offer them $22k out the door. |

A great bargaining chip I've found is a carmax appraisal. Have your trade in appraised, wait for toyota to tell you what they will give you for your trade and then pull it out if it's less than carmax. Once the deal is all said and you have their "best price." Walk out.

Sell the BMW to a private party for $16k and it should go quick if that's really below blue book value, then go to the dealer with cash and you just got the FRS for $10-11k like you wanted.
