Same with me, I've done my own oil changes since I was a kid, working on dad's cars, and never heard of changing a drain plug gasket. This is also my first Subaru too...strange quirks with these cars.

Crush washer, not gasket.

But yes, always check to make sure you get the crush washer off of either the plug OR THE OIL PAN. Sometimes they stick to the oil pan, then you don't clean off the oil dripping from the pan and you don't see the crush washer, so you install a new crush washer on your drain plug and now you've doubled up your crush washers and everything is leaking.

Ask me how I know.

Anyways, get the Fumoto valve. It's easy to install, comes with a new washer (it's rubbery and won't leak), and makes oil changes a breeze.

Crush washers are designed for single use, probably for this reason.

They're like less than a $1 from the dealer, I always get one with the oil filter. It's pretty cool too watching the washer flare out when torquing it down, one of the things I look forward to when doing the oil change (I must be getting old)

Audi only sells you a drain plug complete with pre installed crush washer.

Jaguar ditto.

That's for older cars which require removal of a drain plug to change the oil.....

What is it about the term "crush" washer that seems unclear?

Reusing one is like washing and reusing zip lock bags or certain very useful but non-reusable rubber items. Now that really does take cheap to a new level. You really can't afford a car or a girlfriend if you have to re-use these items.

Correct. My dealer tapes a new crush washer to every oil filter he sells, no extra charge!

wow, that's a good dealer! Smart move to loose $0.80 or so to build a relationship with a customer. Wish more of them were like that.

The factory drain plug crush washer is horribly distorted on most cars when inspected on first oil change. I'd say one of the worst to re-use. Always change it to avoid this problem.

Weird, every car I've owned and changed oil on has/had a gasket/washer on drain plug. I tended to reuse them a couple times though. The FR-S/Subaru factory ones do crush a lot though so I so far have replaced with every change. LandCruiser a little leak don't matter, it just adds to the protective coating!

Since I was the first FR-S to have an oil change at my Toyota dealer, they didn't even know a new crush washer was needed and had none in stock. Who trains these people anyway?

The tech re-used the original washer and they said they would re-change the oil if it leaked. It doesn't.

Got two more free oil changes to keep me happy - must be a Scion service survey coming...

I had change my first oil around 1000 miles. I went to the Subaru dealer and got 12 quarts other their oil and two filters. The guy behind the counter also stated that I needed to got two new washer. I changed the oil and replaced with new washer. No problems encountered.

Decided to do my own oil change. I got oil and filter from Toyota dealer. They threw in 2 crush washers.

Went home, drained oil, and reused the crush washer that was on the car. Not too many places you can go without reinstalling the drain plug and filling with oil. Turns out the too small, waxy, cardboard Toyota washers they provided to me were of no use on the FR-S. No leaks and I'll get crush washers from Subaru next go round. Makes you wonder what they use at the Toyota dealer.
