I drifted my automatic twice now in drift events and I autocross it almost monthly, and she is still happily running without issues.

You should be fine. My "Break in" period I drove my car harsh and after a thousand miles a mechanic buddy of mine took the car apart for funzies and said everything was perfectly normal.

Some times I tell my car what a naughty car it's been and I give it a little spank on the bumper. Then I send it to the garage to think about what it has done.

Am I being too hard on my car?

I do this more than just once in awhile. I have grown to love rainy days for the drive to work.

assuming todays prices and epa combined estimates, its more like $1600. but whose counting?

Hard on your tires, the car will be fine if you aren't burning up your clutch.

I don't literally mean took apart, plus it was his first time seeing the new engine, so I let him keep the car overnight while he looked at it. My friend has been a mechanic for the probably 30 years now.

so he figuratively took the car apart?? Like, visualizing it in his mind or something?

Man I wish I could check clearances and wear just by looking at the outside of an engine...

I simply do not believe your friend (unless he is a crack head) took apart any part of the car that would have experienced any wear from harsh driving (like the internals)...I for one am a fan of hard break-in but I don't make stuff up to back it up.

Uhh, driving a car hard for a few months and saying everything is fine is a GREAT long term reliability test... I rather burn a clutch on a manual over a torque converter or the tiny clutch packs on a auto.

No car is designed to be driven hard everyday. Even the GTR suffered tranny issues from hard launches and that's 10x the sports car a FRS is. No one but the engineers for now know these answers to long term
effects of driving it stupid hard. Owners will find out after a few years.

I am sure your "mechanic friend" could see microscopic wear and tear of a year of hard driving..... Absolutely no science behind these claims.
