I saw them in person, but my phone was nearly dead at the time and I didn't take pictures. The cracking was in the shape of a star starting from the alignment dot in the middle of the lens.

Yup, in most states the burden of proof is on the dealer - they are the ones that have to prove that your "mod" was the cause of the failure in order to deny your claim. If they can't prove that your mod was what directly led to the failure, they can't deny your warranty claim.

those types of tails are kind of played out by now, no?

I'm not keen on painting them, just waiting for some tails that have a look that one could mistake for OEM come out
