I had the dealer look into this for me (amongst many other things) and they replaced the center HVAC vent surround.

So far so good.

I solved this issue today.

I removed the radio surround, starting in the lower right corner of the panel.

I unbolted the 4 10mm bolts and removed the radio - wow, a lot of plugs.

Then I shimmed all of the plastic between where the radio would have been, and the vents above it to add pressure between all the panels. I used cardboard and surplus 1/8"TH Dynaliner as shims.

Upon replacing the radio, I stuffed a couple sheets of cardboard between the radio and plastic between the radio and vents, again to add some pressure. After reinstalling the radio and snapping the surround back into place, there are no more rattles from this area of my car.

Win.

I woukd definitely use something other then cardboard. The radio will get hot and cardboard does not belong in a dash. Use plastic or metal. Not paper products.

I have this rattle on my brz limited, it's killing me! Everyone thinks i'm crazy too. If I stick my hand in the phone holder and push UP, I can suppress this rattle. One of these days i'm gonna take the whole thing apart and apply gorilla tape on every lose piece.

I have this really annoying rattle now too. Could someone please post pics or video of how to get rid of this, or explain the process in more exact detail. Thanks!!

----------------

UPDATE: Laika gave me a hand trying to fix this today. We put foam padded tape above and below the radio and on top of the phone cubby. The rattle is still there unfortunately...it still seems like pushing up on the inside of the phone cubby makes it go away. Any tips would be appreciated!

Wow thanks for directing me to this Indestruct!!! I just did the zip ties and that seems to have done it! It didn't even require removing that much...just taking out the phone cubby with USB port. Thanks again!

Just an update that this rattle started to come back a bit even though I had the zip ties installed. BUT, I had the HVAC out for a mod, and I cut the zip ties hoping to be able to locate the rattle with everything open. The rattle didn't occur, so I started putting things back piece by piece and checking for the rattle after each part. The rattle didn't come back, and hasn't come back in a couple weeks (even though there are NO zip ties or anything now)! So the cause of this rattle may have something to do with the HVAC connectors being loose or something. I'd advise taking out the HVAC and then putting it back in making sure all of the connectors are secure. Worked for me (for now at least)!!
