It's a cheaply manufactured car. Looks like the pressure has forced the plastic to bow and now it is permanently like that.

When you pry open the cheap plastic airbox to get the filter in/out, it WILL BULGE like that. Nothing wrong with it functionally.. it just looks incorrectly put on.

The clamps essentially "pull" the two plastic halves together to create a tight seal on the edge of the air filter, so there's not really any danger of having unfiltered air bypass the filter.

thats what i was thinking, seems like a tighter seal that way then plastic on plastic. i've yet to see one picture of it closed any other way, maybe it is actually designed to close like that?

I have a K&N in mine but I didn't notice any material sticking out like that. I'll check tonight.

I just noticed a pic of a preproduction Subaru BRZ with it poking out too. It seems to be common...

Just looked at mine...same thing. However it looks as if all is OK and it is sealing just fine.

Mine is like that as well. I don't find the airbox too bad to put together with the stock filter, but as someone else said, it is a royal pain in the ass with the TRD filter.
