lol are you guys' serious? That's an functioning LSD. It's NOT a problem, that is how the clutch in the rear differential coming to an immediate stop sounds like.

Now iff you want to get rid of it, I'll be more then happy in trade you for a non LSD differential + a little cash on top of it. You'll be in the world of 1 tire fires, but I'm sure the majority of guys' on this board won't mind it too much as there cars will probably never see a real track.

But seriously if you want a non lsd diff, like I said I'll trade you one that fits in your fr-s/brz for your factory one. LMAO

So my lsd only started to function after 1300 miles? This noise didn't happen until recently.

It's a Torsen LSD, gears only, there are no clutch plates in the factory LSD.

I notice the rear clunk shifting into first while at a stop (unless I hold the clutch in for 3 seconds), shifting into 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. It's not constant, but it does happen every day.

I've also noticed what I believe to be the same rear clunk while cruising at expressway speeds. If I let off the gas and wait a second for the car to engine brake (leaving the car in gear obviously) and then do any throttle tip in other than very lightly it happens.

I'm not really concerned about it yet, but being that my past job had me evaluting cars for a major car OEM for 6+ years I can't help but focus on it.

Most RWD cars (including my 3 day old Toyota GT86) make some strange clunk and boinks, there are more thing that moves and stops compared to a regular FWD car. Usually i think it's just driveshaft play since it's not just 1 solid bit.

My old Supra used to clunk alot when shifting etc
Also my last Evo 9 clunked now and then when you are not super gentle with the clutch. My last dailydriver VW Passat FWD was dead quiet though

It's possibly the diff housing bushings, I know Imprezas were notorious for a clunk under hard shifting.

I am very sensitive to these things. My Cadillac was so clunky it ruined the driving experience.

Super thread rescuscitation.

I'm getting this after 128k miles. I do have one of the rear diff bushings worn out. The worse it wears, the worse the clunk gets. I have on hard pull, then shift, worst on 1-2 shift. I can go soft and eliminate driving. I crawled under my car tonight to look for some interference to account for the noise. I found an exhaust clamp bumping the steel tank cover a bit, but that wasn't it.

I can't find any metal to metal rubbing/clunking anywhere. I'm thinking the shot bushings have some metal capture in them that's smacking together now that the bushing material is shot. I had this happen on one of my jeep engine mounts. I can't explain the noise any other way at the moment. And I'm not sure how these bushings are put together, my answer is pure theory.

In my case, it sounds like it's coming from the back left, but may just be the center where the bushing is. Sounds further back than the transmission bushing, and I just put the whiteline bit in there far enough back it shouldn't be it as I torqued it down good, and I'd hear and feel that under the center console.
