Rear end clunk when shifting?

Do you guys get this too? It's not every shift but happens all day. You can feel it clunk in the rear when you shift.

Never mind. Found links

IM assuming is the LSD activating. I can hear it every time on first or 2nd gear. On my first service at the dealer I will ask!! I'll let you know

I'm having the same problem now. Did you ever figure out what it was?

Under hard acceleration or just normal 3 - 4k shifting?

That's another issue, but thanks. This is when up shifting to 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th gear. I haven't really noticed it when down shifting though. It sounds like its coming from the differential.

Are you letting the clutch out aggressively?

tintumz22 09-04-2012 12:06 PM

2nd the comment above.. Letting the clutch out aggressively makes that sound.. mechanical sounds I hear is just from 1st>2nd and little bit at 3rd.. above that all good..

Tunz 09-04-2012 02:38 PM

That could be it, but I never noticed it before and I haven't been driving the car any differently. I'll take it for a drive in a couple hours and see.

Sometimes get it whilst engaging 1st whilst stationary.

Just a bit of driveshaft reaction - those acclimatised to FWD aren't used to such odd noises. The S2000 makes a few as well!

welcome to sports car

I'm well aware of the "thud" when engaging 1st. This is a different issue though. This only started happening a few days ago and it only happens when upshifting.

My sti made quite a few noises as well. I'm only worried because this just started happening after 1,300 miles.

avholic 09-05-2012 01:57 AM

I have same issue. I don't get the thud while upshifting but get it when I release the clutch at 3rd, 4th & 5th. I realize the release/engagement point becomes more shallow on higher gears but I still get the clunk even if i release the clutch slowly. It only started recently (around 890 miles) and the behavior has been sporadic. I observed it gets worse on higher ambient temps. I think the gear/lsd oil they used is meant for cold weather, not the likes of AZ, TX. I read from another thread that these issues went away after replacing gear and lsd oil. Im thinking of doing the same but don't wanna give the dealer a reason to refuse me if and when I get the CEL.

That's what I'm getting. I guess I should have been more specific. I've heard the same thing about the oil. I'm dropping my car off at the dealership Thusday night so I should know what the problem is by Friday afternoon.
