my timing chain broke

My car just threw these codes and when opened up the timing chain and camshaft sprocket were broken per my local dealership.... 73k. Seems like a warranty should cover this in an unmodified car...what happened to modern car reliability let alone Toyota...? Subaru parts?

There must be an issue with some engines then. What year is yours and is it an FR-S or BRZ? I'd fight with Toyota or Subaru to get them to cover it. Because timing chains shouldn't be breaking, especially on a stock vehicle.

I'm calling Toyota tomorrow - apparently they are located on Cali but use central time... the dealership told me they no longer assist with this process but just give the number to call... I will update as I find out more. Right now I'm being sold more labor to see if the internals are damaged vs. putting in a junk yard refurbished engine for like 5k + labor...

Sooooo...my engine is destroyed and Toyota considered helping me financially but then backtracked after giving me an initial offer of $2500 towards the repair or replacement. It took forever (I'm at week 4 of a rental car) and it's all very cryptic but I can only assume it is because I couldn't find the complete service records and its past warranty. Toyota doesn't actual provide any kind of information or report (although I'm continuing to ask). They just said, through the dealer, we're not giving your any money towards replacement or repairing your car - it left a bad taste in my mouth. So I'm stuck purchasing a rebuilt engine for a boat load of money... You know it's interesting because the service manual specifically says that they won't deny a claim if one doesn't produce perfect service records but I guess since it's out of warranty they do...? So much for Toyota reliability...

I think you can just total it on your insurance, pay the deductible and be done with it. I bought a BRZ with 78k miles on it and I'm praying this crap doesn't happen to me. I can't even understand what causes this to happen.

If it's out of warranty of course they'll deny the claim. It's out of warranty.

As for the reliability- a couple cases on an internet forum aren't exactly a pattern failure. 1 isn't being covered by warranty because an aftermarket part probably caused the issue and the other isn't covered because it's out of warranty. I'm not looking to turn mine in as soon as the warranty is up because of this. The fact that there are so few threads like this is encouraging for me. Check out some Focus RS/ST forums....

If you still have this car your in luck! They just issued a recall on 2013 86's for valve spring failures.
