It does do random, but only in the selected album. Having it play random tracks from the whole usb device would be progress. Maybe my HU is defective.

Yeah, I might be to the point where I just use my (Android) phone as the source. Neutron is a great player. At this point, I'm either too stupid for a touch-screen or something else is wrong.

That gives me an idea. You tried the flat root catalog, right. I think it'd be interesting to try the other direction, adding a layer to the catalog structure.

Did you had the albums as catalogs directly on the root? Try reorganizing to artists on root with albums as sub-catalogs.
Did you have the artist catalogs? Try creating a root catalog "Music" and move all the artist catalogs into that.

Mixing up the catalog structures may work because some code monkeys are fed based on output, not quality. They tend to skip corners.
