Aluminum = soft
Steel = not soft.

Many transmissions have aluminum shift forks riding in a steel collar. I've seen inside enough transmissions to know that premature wear of shift forks is a very real thing.

When they do that I usually delay starting my roll for a couple of seconds. Sometimes if you watch in the mirror they throw their hands up and start yelling, kinda fun actually. In NYC cabs, livery cars and uber cars will honk just before the light changes which sometimes causes people that aren't paying attention to start prematurely causing other obvious problems.

Yes I have been rear ended for not taking off quickly enough.

I've been resting my hand on the shifter on all my cars for years and have issues.

The shift fork/collar mechanism is designed for brief application of force, not constant contact. Leaving one's hand resting on the gearshift is abuse, plain & simple. Whether or not one cares that shifting issues will arise after 100K miles is a personal choice.

Understanding the design of any system and making an informed decision about what to do with that knowledge is a win in all cases.

...which stands to reason, why dont they simply beef it up enough to allow the constant force? so people can have the option to rest the hand there or not?

Because that would require a pressurized oiling system to maintain a lubricant film a la engine thrust bearings or it would require roller-type thrust bearings. cost/benefit just ain't there. Besides, everybody knows MTs are a dying breed anyhow. :P

Beefier systems do hold up better to abuse but that doesn't change the fact that it's abuse nonetheless.

Hahaha, in Bahrain, the yellow lights up between red and green. The honking starts at the yellow.
