I put up the hand-brake and take my foot off the brake pedal any time I know it's gonna be more than a 5 second wait

Good call on reversing backward. This video led me to a GTR racing video, thanks.

I don't understand how you can do that, isn't it disturbing when your car starts to move backwards on its own?

Yea but people don't notice it when they're busy looking down at their phones (or otherwise distracted)

That was my first thought. Probably texting or something.

But the feeling of the car starting to roll backwards... that person has damaged semicircular canals? :O

Then they haven't developed proper habits. When I'm stopped, my foot is practically glued to the brake pedal. Same with the left foot on the clutch. I check usually 2 or 3 times that I'm in neutral before lifting off the clutch when I'm going to be stopped for a short while. Even when I have the parking brake on, my habit is that my foot is still sandwiching the brake pedal between my sole and the floorboards. It's just habit. If I get distracted with my phone, that foot stays there. I've even been at home with the car off after having just pulled in, messing with my phone, and FORGET that my foot is still planted on the brake when it doesn't need to be. I've fumbled around for stuff in the same situation and forgotten that I could take my foot off the brake.

It's a habit I learned when learning to drive (and I learned on an automatic).

As a result I have NEVER accidentally rolled forward or back b/c I got distracted. Not in an AT or an MT. Ever.

It's actually not that hard to prevent it from rolling backwards. I don't understand when I see other people rolling back so much before setting off. I guess they are just super lazy or very bad drivers.

But yeah, I have had to reverse my car and honk a couple times when people clearly can't see that my car is there and they just keep reversing into it. Nice save though, OP. You did the right thing.

When I first started driving, I would stay hard on my brakes during a stop too. However, I noticed that I was warping my brake discs more often and realized that it was likely due to that habit when I was braking hard off the freeway and staying hard on the brakes for a few minutes in one spot. Basically, it can deform the brake disc if you do that. So since then, I always used just enough brake force to keep it from rolling back and have no problems.

Even for autos... if you are sitting flat, your car will lurch forwards without you touching the gas pedal. So no excuse for anyone NOT to be on the brakes at a dead stop.

Good reaction to OP for this avoidance.

If you are on an incline steep enough if you let go of the brakes while in "D" in an automatic you won't necessarily move anywhere without applying some gas in my experience
