I'd like to see the same. If this can be confirmed it really helps to explain why we get the washer chirp.

I'm definitely going to add a small amount if 2 stroke oil to my gas tank.

How about adding a chicken salad sandwich to your gas tank. That ought to make things nice and quiet.

Don't you think you ought to think this thing all the way through before you accept that some forum jockey knows more than twenty Japanese car engineers?

Not sure if crickets go for chicken salad sandwiches.

Diesel guys have been adding 2-stroke oil to their tanks for quite some time. Lubricates the top end and leads to better gas mileage. A lot of gasoline folks do the same for the same exact reasons.

I didn't go with the Lucas Top End lubricant/cleanser due to the cost. If this is going to be a common thing for a while -- while the 20 Japanese engineers get stuff sorted -- I figured I'd go with just the lubricant side of that Lucas product.

If you go this route, ensure that you choose a low ash variety. This will minimize the effect on the catalytic converter. Also, I chose a variety that did not advertise fuel stabilizers. This quality makes sense for your chainsaw but I didn't see the point in adding fuel stabilizer to the mix.

So really, we need less catalytic converters is what you're saying.

So I dropped off my car for service today to get the speaker grille replaced and notified the tech of the cricket noise, and also my rattling/vibration noise from 4K RPM to redline at WoT...

I told them to keep the car as long as they need because I'll be on the road for a few weeks/months.

Told my dad to pick it up if and when it gets finished, and will let you all know what they think of it.

/crosses fingers

(yeah maybe I'm being OCD too, had discussion with my father and he thinks it's normal for the DI technology since it's new and also thinks the car is choked up and needs to breath more)... definitively detuned from the factory, maybe the engineers were scared the DI system would get too hot?

When I first read the suggestion of adding a bit of 2-stroke oil, I thought the same thing. As I stated above, the owner's manual says that (regarding oil consumption) using 1.1 liters of oil for 600 miles is not excessive. If they deem that kind of oil burning acceptable, I would hope 1/8th of that amount (4oz) in a tank of fuel wouldn't be a problem. I shouldn't say 1/8, as a tank of gas will get approx 300 miles, so more like 1/4 the acceptable limit.

The Lucas product was recommended to me by someone who has been working with DI for a long time. I bought the small (5oz) bottle mainly to have a small re-usable container to to keep in the car, and refill as i use it. I have some good 2-stroke oil on the shelf, and may try refilling with that. The small bottle of Lucas is not cheap ($5.99 here), but a 1 liter bottle is $11.99. Assuming you use 100 ML per fill up, you'll get 10 fill ups per bottle, or $1.20 per fill...not expensive.

I am not a "forum jockey", just someone who is tired of listening to this noise, and wants to shut it up until a permanent solution is found (ie Subaru/Toyota start sending out redesigned pumps that can deal with "squeaky clean" fuel).

My BRZ vibrates at higher RPM as well but I think it's the nature of this engine.

Just added 2oz of 2 stroke oil to half a tank of gas.

It killed the crickets instantly and they were loud. Feels so good to drive the car without that stupid noise.

I hope toyobaru addresses this fuel pump noise and doesn't leave it unresolved.

Does anyone have official word on the addition of 2 stroke oil or anything else and whether it could have unforseen effects down the road (beyond removing the "green" aspect of my car)?

It seems a bit odd to have to carry around some oil whenever I fill up... but I would do it.

The same stuff I use for my weed whacker. Sears 2 stroke engine oil.

It was only 2oz as a test. If I decide to do this regularly until this is fixed I'll buy a bottle of something fancier.

Not that I have tested this or anything. But for those of you that are contemplating adding some two-stroke oil to your gas, you may want to try oil meant for marine applications. Two-stroke outboards have been running high pressure direct injection pumps for years now. Most marine shops will sell you the oil by bulk, too.

Used a shot of Dura Lube - Upper Cylinder/Fuel Injector Cleaner/lube in my tank of gas a couple days ago and wanted to see how it would go after some driving....

Second day I had almost no crickets, tonight coming back to work from lunch I have no crickets...

I just had my fuel light go on for the first time. I filled up before that ever happened at Mobil or BP the last 3 times.

This time I went to Shell. Seems like the car really runs better on Shell. I'm certain that this is completely a placebo effect as I always laughed quietly to myself when someone says something like that but I HAVE to believe it because I spent 4.15/gal when the Mobil station 20 yards away was charging 3.61/gal for 93.

Fortunately my crickets are still dead but I'm certain there's still enough 2 stroke oil left in the gas to do that on its own. No way to really attribute this to the gas.
