How hard it is to find ethanol free gas is relative to where you live. In some places its hard in others not so much. For some, its a one block drive and for others 500 miles, just like a lot of things really....

I live outside of DC, so I wasn't particularly surprised. I work in VA and they have a ton of them, as compared to Maryland anyway. I don't think any of them are near where I work though.

Whoa I didn't realize California uses ethanol. From what I was told, Ethanol basically artificially inflates the octane rating as well. If this is true then Californias 91 is actually even worse then I thought..
Btw I just hit 400 and I barely hear the chirping now. I couldn't really hear it with the hood close but with it open it a little bit more distinct. This weekend I'll fill my tank 25% with 100 octane to see if it helps |

http://pure-gas.org/ However, just because you're buying 10% ethanol fuel doesn't mean you're buying "low quality". The quality of the fuel and detergents in it may be high it's just that ethanol has few hydrocarbons then pure petrol so the only real gain in using pure gas may be slightly better fuel economy but it doesn't mean you're getting a cleaner or "better" quality gas regarding your fuel pump. |

On behalf of all Californians... we already know our gas sucks here. We are more interested in a solution of the best available gas or precedure to make our new car run and sound better, based on our highest octane is 91. Thank you..

But IMO all this shouldn't even have to be done to stop the chirping. This is a Toyota/Subaru problem that we shouldn't have to find solutions on our own |

You're probably thinking of phase separation which once Gasoline loses it's ethanol content will lose some of it's octane value. I've heard some people have found that Premium is not required to have Ethanol. It might be worth checking into if you still have any concerns. |

However, in my case, Ethanol free gas is available, and that stopped the chirping for me. I didn't hear a peep out of it today. Until Toyota/Scion/Subaru come up with a solution, getting gas without ethanol, or adding something like this http://www.lucasoil.ca/products/prod...&cat=HeavyDuty should do the trick. Adding 4-5 ounces per tank of good 2-stroke oil may also work. I was a little concerned about this option at first, but after reading in the owner's manual that burning 1.1 liters of engine oil for 600 miles of driving is not considered excessive, 4-5 ounces per tank is peanuts. |

I have some nearby, but none of them particularly on my "way". I won't be going out of my way to get to one of them, I'll keep using the same ones I've been using regularly.

I wonder what adding oil — or anything else — will do to a catalytic converter. To sensors. To anything else aft of the combustion chamber. |

They allow a high sulfur content. That's why all the oil in California is shipped to Japan and Asia as our is not the sweet crude. Sulfur acts as a lubricant. |
