Kind of reminds me of the age-old way of "troubleshooting" computers -- beep codes. That was one of the few things that learning in early 2003 that still applies today. The rest as far as IRQ and interrupts don't ever really come up as potential issues nowadays.
It always irked me because beep codes (like CELs) vary from manufacturer and some aren't even used at all anymore. Newer motherboards are starting to feature a double-digit (seven segment LEDs) code that tells you what is going on. I upgraded my brother's PC recently and got a board with this feature, REALLY helpful. Most things are going towards being more open, the car manufacturers should embrace it a bit more. They don't need to have everything exposed, but most cars should be able to at least display the CEL on the radio or another screen (like all those ones Hondas come with now). It's stupid that you even need to pay somebody $X to get that code for you, just a grotesque rip-off.

Car had a rough idle on start up this morning. I attributed it to the cooler weather this morning.
Regardless, I'm going to watch it more closely. last 4 of my VIN is 1034. |

Go to an autoparts store (in my experience, Advance)... Ask to borrow an OBD2 scanner..... plug it in, find code, clear if necessary, walk back in to store 2 minutes later.... diagnosis for free. |

On subject...I've complained about a rough/low idle concern since day one. It doesn't seem to affect the performance but it doesn't seem right. Mine gets so low at times it seems like the engine is going to stall but it is very intermittent. No CEL's yet...but I hope there is a reflash/TSB in the works to get it "corrected".

Oddly enough on my wife's 2005 Legacy you can open a panel by the driver's knee and connect two cables, with that done you can get it to display codes on the dash display. It was strange. Other cars sometimes have similar things. Some require pressing the trip reset right after turning the ignition or something like that. It still only gets you as far as the codes. Often times several things get OR'ed into a given code and even obvious seeming codes (like a knock sensor code) could mean anything from a sensor problem to something more obnoxious. |

Update:
Car checked in the dealer today. Had them also know about a clunking noise when releasing the clutch when in neutral, when in reverse and 1st gear.( More audible on those circumstances) Checked the parts and saw the same as the pictures shown earlier on this thread. New ECU confirmed last 3 digit #811. Overheard from the parts rep that it is really in testing mode for all these parts came in for the repair. (The feeling I'm having with the variety of VIN #s having this problem is a Recall SOON) But we'll standby for that! I'll post whenever I get an update from my Service Rep. Hopefully the fix will do it cuz I'm really eager to drive my car! It's really a sad feeling just looking at the car inside the garage! For now.. More forum reading and exploring while waiting until tomorrow or Wednesday until they give me a call. Also, they gave a a Camry loaner! Told them that I was expecting a corolla but yeah they gave me a special treat I guess. |

Just thought I'd add that this exact problem happened to me too. I bought my FR-S on Wednesday. The problem occurred Thursday. Took it back to the dealer Friday, and there it sits. They are telling me that it needs a new ECU and oil control valve. Coincidentally, both parts are backordered with no estimated shipping date. I bought a car, drove it for a day, and havent seen it since. Can I invoke the California Lemon Law on this? The car had less than 200 miles on it when it happened.

Basically if it gets fixed for the same problem X amount of times in X amount of miles it's a lemon. There is also a section dealing with safety issues which is slightly more lenient when declaring the vehicle a lemon. This section here should cover the idle issues if it keeps coming back: "(3) the vehicle is out of service for repair for a cumulative total of 30 or more days in the 24 months or 24,000 miles, whichever occurs first, and at least two repair attempts were made in the first 12 months or 12,000 miles immediately following the date of original delivery to an owner and a nonconformity still exists that substantially impairs the vehicle's use or market value. The initial 12-month period or 12,000 mile limit, the subsequent 12-month period or 12,000 mile limit, and the 30-day period shall be extended by any period of time during which repair services are not available to the owner because of a war, invasion, strike or fire, flood, or other natural disaster. During any period of time that the manufacturer or distributor lends a comparable motor vehicle to the owner during the time the vehicle is being repaired by a franchised dealer, the 30-day period provided for in this subsection is tolled." |

I have an OBD2 reader, I'm just saying in the generality of things. I know they're maybe not expensive anymore but with how technology has come.. it's silly not to have that as part of the diagnostics now.

Update
So I called Corporate again, and by now I have a case number. They attempted to get in touch with the service tech working on my car to no avail.
I then called the dealership directly. They never received the parts needed for the repair. Their best estimate puts them in on Thursday, with another day required for the install at the least. So I probably won't see my car until next Monday. Looks like I'll be a total of 18 days without the car, a dirty Hyundai Elantra as my replacement, and no firm idea as to when my car will be fixed or if it will even work right when I get it back. Only had the damn thing for 24 hours since I purchased it. Extremely frustrating experience so far. |
