How difficult is it to spray my taillights red? I really dont want to screw up

Just wanted to bump this thread with an update.

I have been planning on spraying my taillights red, and after contacting a member and doing some research, I decided to go with Metalcast red, and a Urethane clear coat called Spraymax from automotivetouchup.com.

I wanted to test out both the paint color of metalcast, and the urethane coating of the clear. My little bro needed to replace his headlights on his bugeye so I used his old headlight as a test mule.

I sanded down his headlight with 800 grit, washed/cleaned it, then hit it with 3 coats of metalcast red. after the 3 coats were down, I then used 2000 grit sandpaper and wetcoated to get out any dust/imperfections. I then sprayed 2 coats of this urethane clear coat down.

I have not wetsanded the clear, and look how damn good this stuff came out. Its basically like glass and I haven't even touched it with polish. There is such a minimal amount of orange peel that you have to really stare at the damn thing in the right light to see it (basically non existent). There are a few minor spots that I think I could have avoided just being in a more paint friendly environment, but for someone who isn't too keen on sanding this stuff will be perfect for you. Not only that, i've used clear coats in the past and this stuff just feels nice and thick. The only downside to this stuff is it has a 24 hour shelf life after mixing. Not knowing this, I mixed it together (its a two part spray can, you have to push a button on the bottom and it mixes together), and now wasted a full can of clear just to do a test light.

Its a little expensive, but I feel that outside of bringing your taillights to someone to get clearcoated at a shop for you, this is the BEST DIY option for clear.

I have to now wait for another can of clear, so I will be doing my taillights next weekend. Had plans on doing them this weekend, but now I can't since I broke the seal on the one I have. The darker spot on the headlight is from the inside light bezel being painted, so the lighter area will be what my entire tail lights will look like when finished.

i wanna try this but im afraid ill screw up. can i remove the paint/ tint if i dont like it? dont wanna buy a new set of tails..

Lacquer thinner will remove the paint quickly. I don't know if this will have any long-term effects for the plastic lens, but I had to redo my lights once (on my truck) and had no issues removing the paint.

use a a pick tool, or a small flat head. Just work them off.

Just finished installing my lights after paint. Will post a pic tomorrow.

Just cut the wire clips off. It's not absolutely necessary that the wire goes back exactly where you got it from.
