Just sayin. I would probably try to avoid the roads until you get some winters put on. It's safer for everyone and your car will thank you when it's ding free this spring!

Yeah, we are getting the mess you guys have in Canada here in Minnesota this weekend. Just in time for the outdoor Packers playoff game. Windchill should be -20 to -30 or so at the game. The visitors are the San Francisco 49ers

Apartment complex wasn't cleared well yesterday and there was a decent amount of snow on the ground. Didn't want to risk it so took the bus to work. Glad to be able to drive again today. The Yokohama W-Drives are working pretty well.

I have a stock FRS with OEM size Blizzaks.
I survived driving through Philly last night at Midnight in the recent snowstorm and went 30 miles only needing a good push uphill once by a friendly stranger in a forester (thank you!) after what I assume was snow freezing between the tread on the tires as it got progressively worse with what appeared to be same road conditions. I assume this because my wipers were clear to begin and developed tennis ball sized ice chunks during the hour or so of driving. I can't compare them to anything else (only snow tires used to date) but it appeared my car was doing better than the average heavy FWD sedan with likely all seasons. I definitely fish tailed a lot especially up hill but braking was superb and handling also excellent. |

Would u guys recommend putting weight in the trunk to add more traction? Or there is no need to and it will throw the balance off the car?

![]() Some say "yes", others say "no". Personally, I'd suggest you put on some good winter tires and leave the weight in the sandbox. humfrz |

This car already has plenty of its weight over the rear wheels. The main issue seems to be a propensity to break traction too easily. This results in fishtailing more readily than one expects. My opinion is the Torsen transfers torque too aggressively and too quickly for ideal winter traction. Interestingly, once the torque bias ratio is exceeded by a significant amount the lower grip wheel begins to spin and then the TRC kicks in to brake that wheel, allowing more torque to transfer. If you find yourself with very good grip on one wheel and no grip on the other you will find the Torsen does a good job. This occurs even with TRC switched completely "off". Even more interestingly, the Torsen will spin both rear wheels if you wish to hang the tail out. How the computer CDN differentiate (pun intended) these two driving conditions is , well, even more interesting. The TRC and VSC are quite sophisticated for such a cheap car. Apart from this tendency to break traction too early and too suddenly the BRZ is quite easy to drive in winter conditions. You just need a bit of room for the tail wagging. Driving in heavy traffic in very slippery conditions is far more exciting than it should be! |

This is my second winter with FR-S in Indiana. Two tubes of sand 40lbs each pushed right up against the rear wheel tubs in the trunk. It helps a little when taking off from a stop. I will say not much, but there's enough I notice. I take these tubes in and out of the trunk a dozen times each winter.
