Will I survive this winter?

Here we go with the sub freezing temps. It's now go-time in New England for winter driving conditions. The FR-S is my daily driver and currently the stock all-seasons are my tires. I plan on making observations of my experience this winter. Hopefully some interesting conversations and helpful info for others will come out of this thread. I will comment after my first drive in winter conditions. While I am prepared to get dedicated snow tires and possibly dedicated rims I plan on holding out as long as possible. This is going to be interesting. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Please do yourself, and the other drivers, a favour and invest in winter tires. They're worth every penny on any car, but necessary for this car in your climate. |
Im going to put sandbags in my trunk and see how it goes from there.
|
I've got the OEM Bridgestone's that scion shipped some the vehicles with. I understand that the Michelins are more prevalent OEM.

Snow tires will make it a lot easier, and way more fun (not to mention safer).

Instead of paying $1500+ for good winters! I bought a Saturn with new snow tires for $4000. Saves some km's on the FRS and keeps a little more gas money in my pocket, but it's not quite as much fun. ;) |
Jesus man 26f that's cold as F!! J/k, man you Americans are spoiled in the temps department. My car got so cold last year the stereo wouldn't turn on lol.

our winters are pretty goddamn tame compared to people with real winter, our snow tomorrow will be gone Wednesday.
lot of days during the winter theres nearly a 50 degree difference between here and where family is in northern minnesota. that said, i run dedicated snow tires on everything but the truck, and will never be going back. Keep an eye on cl there are deals that pop up and go quick. I picked up a set of nearly new 16" snows on steel wheels yesterday for 400. Nice old couple, even had receipt from last winter. |
The OEM Bridgestone Turanza EL400-02 "all-season" tires apparently suck BAD in the white stuff. Check out how well they're rated in this Tire Rack customer survey:
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/survey...wws=N&showcm=N Rated 24th out of 24 "Standard Touring All Season" tires. Worst tires in a crap category! 3.6/10 for light snow traction, 2.6/10 for deep snow traction, 2.5/10 for ice. I would not be on those tires this winter if I might have to drive an FR-S or BRZ in the snow. Honestly I have to thank this tire, as it prevented us from buying a '13 Mazda3 to replace my wife's '05. The 3 is also on these tires, and the handling felt so uninspired compared to our old 3 that I didn't want anything to do with the newer model. Based on reviews of this tire, that could have been mostly down to them sucking so bad. |
Lol really? Some of you people are trying to compete for 'where I live it is colder' ?
"ah what bro?! 26 degrees!? you spoiled bro. get on my level, I live in -40 degree weather bro!" |
